GPU를 이용한 온라인 전기자동차용 전방 장애물 검출 장치 및 방법이 개시된다. 본 발명에서는 온라인 전기자동차의 운행 전방에 존재할 수 있는 장애물을 실시간으로 검출하고 세그먼트에 공급되는 전원을 차단하기 위한 경보신호를 발생한다. 이를 위해 본 발명은 SAD(Sum of Absolute Difference) 및 상호상관(cross correlation) 방법을 그래픽스 하드웨어(GPU: Graphics Processing Unit)에서 구현하여 스테레오 입력 영상으로부터 시차맵(disparity map)을 빠른 속도로 계산한다. 그리고 지면과 전방의 경계 영역(alarm region)을 강건하게 추정하기 위해 V-시차 정보에 LS(Least Squared) 방법을 적용한다. 또한 해석된 3차원 정보로부터 장애물을 검출한 다음 칼만 필터(Kalman filter)를 통해 검출된 장애물을 실시간으로 추적한다. 그리고 경계 영역에 존재하는 장애물의 개수와 거리정보를 RS232 통신으로 온라인 자동차의 전원 세그먼트의 제어 처리부에 전달한다.
