The present invention relates to a pharmaceutical composition for preventing or treating metabolic syndrome and to a food composition for preventing or alleviating metabolic syndrome, the composition comprising asterubin (asterubine) or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof as an active ingredient. The asterubin of the present invention exhibits an effect whereby the phosphorylation of AMPK (AMP-activated protein kinase) and ACC (acetyl-CoA carboxylase) is increased and the glucose absorption ability of muscle cells is increased, and so can advantageously be used in pharmaceutical compositions and health and functional foods for preventing or treating metabolic syndrome based on this effect.
