Modular stem extension

The modular stem component may include a shaft portion, a head, and a sleeve. The shaft portion is configured for receipt within the intramedullary canal of a bone and the head is configured to receive another component of a modular prosthetic system, such as a femoral neck, thereon. In one exemplary embodiment, the head extends radially around at least a portion of the stem and includes a rib defining a flange extending therefrom. The sleeve, which is formed as an independent part of the modular stem component and is made at least partially of a highly porous biomaterial, includes opposing ends and has a bore extending therethrough. The bore is configured to facilitate sliding receipt of the sleeve on the head.

The transport carrier of this invention is configured for use with an external fixator having a hexagonal rod. The carrier includes a threaded sleeve which accommodates the hexagonal rod of the fixator. A compressible ball collet and retaining nut are carried by the sleeve and serve to lock the sleeve into position on the rod in a known manner. A clamp is carried by the sleeve and rotationally fixed relative to the rod by a key and key way, yet may shift along the sleeve. The clamp is configured to connect to one or more bone pins using a ball collet and retaining nut to fix the clamp to the pin. The bone pins connect to a bone fragment such that as the clamp shifts along the sleeve, the bone fragment is transported between two portions of a bone. An internally threaded sleeve is carried by the externally threaded sleeve and engages the clamp. Upon rotation of the internally threaded sleeve, the clamp and externally threaded sleeve move longitudinally along the sleeve.

A voltage multiplier in which an n-phase circuit charges n-1 capacitors during the separate phases, then during the last or nth phase the capacitors are put in series to create n times the input voltage. MOS transistor devices are used to act as switches to charge a number of series connected capacitors. During a first phase of operation, the first in the series of capacitors is charged to a specific voltage to be multiplied by closing the MOS switches to place the voltage across the capacitor. During a next phase of operation, the first capacitor is disconnected by the switches and the next capacitor in series is charged to the input voltage. During successive phases of operation, successive capacitors are similarly charged. During the last phase of operation, the capacitors are connected in series with the voltage to be multiplied and are connected to an output capacitor. This places a total charge on the output capacitor which is equal to the sum of all the charges on the respective series connected capacitors plus the voltage to be multiplied. This results in an n+1 voltage multiplication wherein n is the number of series connected capacitors.

A spinal rod engagement head is slidably carried by the fixed handle and jaw and includes a spinal rod seat which with contact with the spinal rod produces a balanced seating load on the rod. A threaded pusher rod is carried by the channel which when rotated longitudinally shifts the head relative to the fixed handle.

Roofing granule treatment by coating with a metallic algicide

Metal algicides, such as zinc and copper, are sprayed in the form of droplets of molten metal onto the surface of roofing granules or onto the surface of asphalt roofing compositions in which said granules are embedded. The metal algicides solidify and adhere on the surface of said granules or compositions as relatively fine, randomly distributed, irregular shaped metal globules. During periods of rain or dew upon atmospheric exposure of roofing compositions thus flame treated, or incorporating therein roofing granules so treated, the oxidized globules become ionized so that metallic algicidal ions are slowly released therefrom and leached over the roofing surface, thus retarding the biological growth of algae and/or fungi over extended periods of time. The invention permits an effective distribution of algicidal material over the surface treated, requires the use of advantageously low dosage levels of said metals for satisfactory, long-term algicidal action, and provides a high degree of compatibility with the requirements of conventional roofing granule and asphalt roofing composition production.

Further, the captured screw may be retained by the plate due to the interaction of the flange head and external threads of the captured screw with the top and bottom surfaces of the plate, respectively.

A constrained prosthetic knee having a modular hinge post and a rotating bearing. A cannulated hinge post is rotatably connected to the femoral component of the knee prosthesis so that a hinge post extension may be anteriorly positioned through the hinge post and into the tibial component of the knee prosthesis, after positioning of the femoral component in the femur and the tibial component in the tibia. The hinge post is preassembled to the femoral component so that such assembly is not required during the implantation procedure. A meniscal component forming the rotating bearing of the knee prosthesis is packaged together with the hinge post extension so that the appropriate hinge post extension is readily available.

Method for augmenting femoral components of knee joint prosthesis

A femoral augment for use with a knee joint prosthesis, where the femoral augment includes a main body portion, an aperture formed within the main body portion and extending in a generally distal/proximal direction, and a pair of legs extending outwardly from said main body portion in a generally posterior direction. In the preferred embodiment, the aperture is configured to receive a stem extension implant, and to allow it to pass through. Additionally, the legs of the femoral augment are preferably configured to be seated proximal of a proximal side of a pair of condylar portions of a femoral component of a knee joint prosthesis. The present invention is intended for situations in which the distal portion of the femur is defective, and it provides a method and devices that allow for preservation of healthy peripheral bone, while still providing the necessary augmentation to the distal portion of fee femur.
