The outer wall has pores to permit bone tissue to grow into the outer wall, and the inner surface of the shell engages the socket. The inner wall has access channels suitable for seating a bone screw. The access channels are closed off by an associated integral section of the shell. Preferably, each access channel is closed off by a section of the outer wall so that the shell retains maximal outer surface area for bone tissue ingrowth. When a number of bone screws are needed for affixation of the shell to bone, a number of locations for bone screws can be created in the shell by opening the closed access channels.

A femoral augment, or set of augments, for use with a knee joint prosthesis, where the femoral augment includes a main body portion, an aperture formed within the main body portion and extending in a generally distal/proximal direction, and a pair of legs extending outwardly from said main body portion in a generally posterior direction. In the preferred embodiment, the aperture is configured to receive a stem extension implant, and to allow it to pass through. Additionally, the legs of the femoral augment are preferably configured to be seated proximal of a proximal side of a pair of condylar portions of a femoral component of a knee joint prosthesis. The present invention is intended for situations in which the distal portion of the femur is defective, and it provides a method and devices that allow for preservation of healthy peripheral bone, while still providing the necessary augmentation to the distal portion of the femur.

Epicondylar axis alignment-femoral positioning drill guide

A tool (50) lays out resection or alignment features to prepare a bone end for prosthetic joint replacement. The tool attaches to the end of the femur (20), and positions an initial cut, for example a pair of aligned drill holes for the positioning pins of a prosthesis or the cutting blocks used in preparing the distal femur. The tool includes adjustable assemblies (70, 80) coupled to a main body (60) for setting its position and these are arranged with graduations for sizing the femur. The adjustable assemblies include an epicondylar engaging assembly (70) such as a pair of clamp arms (71, 72) which slide in the body to align the body along the epicondylar axis. It further includes one or more other assemblies (80) which determine a line, offset depth or other coordinate or component of orientation to set the drill guide for optimally locating the initial cut in the femur. Preferably, the other assemblies include an A/P sizing jig in the tool which determines an offset, and the drill guide is coupled so that it positions drill holes on the bone end in coordination with sizing jig. The clamp assembly may further indicate medial/lateral offset information for shifting the center to improve tracking and alignment. This allows the surgeon to confirm or adjust both the size and the position of the prosthesis with respect to several landmarks using a single tool. The drill holes may set a position for a standard cutting block to fit the femoral end component of a prosthetic knee.
