According to the present invention, penicillinolide A isolated from marine fungi: effectively suppresses the generation and activation of IL-1β, TNF-α, IL-6, NO and PGE2, which are cytokines associated with inflammation; effectively inhibits the secretion of NO that can directly induce inflammation; suppresses the movement of inflammation-inducing protein expression inhibitors into nuclei; increases the expression and activation of HO-1 known as an enzyme which exhibits cytoprotective effects from damage caused by oxidative stress; and has low cytotoxicity as a substance derived from natural products and thus is less likely to cause problems related to safety and adverse effects. Therefore, the compound of the present invention can be usefully utilized as a composition for preventing or treating inflammatory diseases.
