According to one embodiment, each beam architecture is associated with a different wireless standard. A receive only smart antenna with a command pointing option for communicating with geostationary satellites that autonomously detects the directions from which desired signal are received, and steer the multiple beams accordingly. An array feed is used to illuminate a parabolic reflector. Each feed element of the receive only smart antenna is associated with a unique beam pointing direction. As a receiver is switched to different feed elements, the far-field beam is scanned, making it possible to track a geostationary satellite in a slightly inclined orbit. This eliminates the need for mechanical tracking and maintains high antenna gain in the direction of the geostationary satellite. The receive only smart antenna also features capabilities to form multiple simultaneous beams supporting operations of multiple geo-satellites in closely spaced slightly inclined orbits. The designs can support orthogonal beams for enhanced bandwidth capacity via multiple beams with excellent spatial isolation.

A system for transmitting a precoding codebook over an air interface , the system comprising:a first station configured to signal a set of indicators via a plurality of antennas to a second station from which the precoding codebook is derived at the second station based on the signaled set of indicators, the set of indicators including less information than the precoding codebook,wherein the set of indicators includes a sub-set of complex elements of the precoding codebook, wherein the complex elements of the sub-set are dependent upon each other,wherein a first antenna of the plurality of antennas is assigned a first antenna weight and a subsequent antenna is assigned a second weight, the second weight being a function of the first antenna weight and an antenna weight of a preceding antenna.2. The system of claim 1 , wherein the set of indicators includes a first set of codewords such that a second set of codewords can be derived at the second station based on a mirror operation.3. A base-station apparatus () and a terminal apparatus () communicate with each other in a communication system. When reporting reception quality information together with data to the base-station apparatus via a channel for use in data transmission, the terminal apparatus reports the reception quality information using a spatial multiplexing method identical to a spatial multiplexing method of the data if the reception quality information is reception quality information that is to be nonoperiodically reported, and reports the reception quality information using a spatial multiplexing method independent of the spatial multiplexing method of the data if the reception quality information is reception quality information that is to be periodically reported. A system and method includes transmission mode design for Extension Carrier of LTE-Advanced. The system includes a base station capable of communicating with subscriber stations using an extension carrier. The extension carrier is not backwards compatible and does not transmit any LTE Release 8-10 cell-specific reference signals (CRS) or Physical Downlink Control Channel. The system including transmission mode design for Extension Carrier of LTE-Advanced uses a basic demodulation reference signal transmission scheme (Basic DM-RS TS) when the PDSCH transmission uses DCI format 1A. Basic DM-RS TS uses DM-RS ports and does not uses CRS ports.

Disclosed are an system and method for compensation of I/Q imbalance in a beamforming OFDM system. The system comprises: a TX beamformer configured at a transmitter end of the beamforming OFDM system; a noise whitener configured at a receiver end of the beamforming OFDM system; and a RX MMSE configured at the receiver end of the beamforming OFDM system. At least one of the TX beamformer, the noise whitener and the RX MMSE receiver, or any combination thereof are capable of jointly processing a carrier and its image subcarrier to compensate the I/Q imbalance in the beamforming system.

The invention discloses a beamforming method for polarized antenna array consisting of a plurality of antenna elements, applied to single layer beamforming or dual layer beamforming, which includes the steps: determining ( 201 ) first beamforming weights for phase compensation among the antenna elements within each polarization direction; determining ( 202 ) second beamforming weights for phase compensation between equivalent channels of two polarization directions; and calculating ( 203 ) hybrid beamforming weights as product of the first beamforming weights and the second beamforming weights. A beamforming apparatus for polarized antenna array is also provided in the invention as well as a radio communication device and a system thereof. With the invention, the single-layer and dual-layer beamforming weights are determined for the cross-polarized antenna array without requiring full channel knowledge or the aid of PMI. Computation complexity is lowered and full power amplifier utilization can be achieved.

Antenna selection and pilot compression in mimo systems

The disclosed embodiments relate to a system that facilitates antenna selection and pilot reduction in a multi-antenna system. During operation, in response to an activating event, the system performs a full pilot transmission by transmitting pilot signals through all available transmit antennas at a base station. The system then determines the selected subset of transmit antennas by receiving lists of selected antennas from mobile stations associated with preferred users, wherein a given mobile station selects a list of antennas in response to pilot signals received during the full pilot transmission. The system then combines the received lists to produce the selected subset, wherein the selected subset includes all antennas which appear in the received lists of selected antennas. Next, during normal system operation, the system periodically performs a selected pilot transmission by transmitting pilot signals through a selected subset of the available transmit antennas.

User equipment, a computer program product and method of setting antenna transmission weightings of user equipment in a wireless telecommunication network. The method employed by the user equipment and computer program product comprises the steps of: receiving an indication of preferred antenna transmission weightings (W 1 ,W 2 ) from at least two base stations in said active set associated with said user equipment, calculating from said received indications of preferred antenna transmission weightings, an indication of compromise antenna transmission weightings which minimise the difference between said indication of compromise antenna transmission weightings and said indication of preferred antenna transmission weightings received from the base stations in said active set and setting said antenna transmission weightings in accordance with said calculated indication of compromise antenna transmission weightings.

Time, frequency and spatial processing parameters for communications between a base station and a mobile station are selected by transmitting synchronization signals in multiple slices of a wireless transmission sector for the base station, and receiving feedback from the mobile station of at least one preferred slice of the multiple slices. In response to selection of one of the slices as an active slice for communications between the base station and the mobile station, reference signals are transmitted in the selected active slice using a corresponding selected precoder and/or codebook. The mobile station estimates and feeds back channel state information (CSI) based on those reference signals, and the CSI is then employed to determine communication parameters for communications between the base station and mobile station that are specific to the mobile station.
