Techniques are described that can be used to identify blocking artifacts in both vertical and horizontal directions. For blocking artifacts in a vertical direction, a horizontal gradient is determined for a pixel. Gradient smoothing is performed for pixels in the row of the pixel. A ratio of the horizontal gradient over the gradient smoothing is determined. Any pixel with a ratio above a threshold and in a segment with a length that exceeds a threshold length as potentially having block artifacts. Each column with pixels that potentially have block artifacts is inspected to determine whether a number of block artifacts in the column are a local maximum and whether there is a sufficient number of blocking artifacts in the column. Columns that satisfy both conditions are considered to include blocking artifacts. To determine blocking artifacts in the horizontal direction, a similar technique is used as described with regard to vertical direction except row and columns are reversed.

Commands are queued from the driver and fetched to the device. An actions table is accessed to determine if drivers are permitted to perform commands. Events are queued for the drivers responsive to commands. If drivers are not permitted to perform a command, device firmware may forward the command to a privileged driver to perform the required command. If a driver is only permitted to perform a command with assistance the command is forwarded for corrections and execution. If a command is to be dropped, a completion event may be queued as if the command had executed. Drivers may have no indication of which actions were taken. The actions table may be changed for hardware/software modifications or dynamically according to configuration changes.

A pair of dictionaries having entries that are synchronized and encoded to support compression and decompression operations are implemented via logic at a compressor and decompressor. The compressor/decompressor logic operatives in a cooperative manner, including implementing the same dictionary update schemes, resulting in the data in the respective dictionaries being synchronized. The dictionaries are also configured with replaceable entries, and replacement policies are implemented based on matching bytes of data within sets of data being transferred over the link. Various schemes are disclosed for entry replacement, as well as a delayed dictionary update technique. The techniques support line-speed compression and decompression using parallel operations resulting in substantially no latency overhead.
