Es wird ein Passivierungs- und Schmiermittel für Gold-, Silber- und Kupferoberflächen sowie für entsprechende Legierungsoberflächen beschrieben, das eine wässrige Emulsion mit einem unverzweigten Fettalkohol als Emulgator umfasst, insbesondere zumindest ein C¶12¶-C¶14¶ Fettalkohol mit etwa 8 Ethoxyeinheiten. Dessen Konzentration beträgt vorzugsweise etwa 25-35 g/l. In dieser wässrigen Emulsion ist als Inhibitor eine organische hydrophobe Thiolverbindung, insbesondere Hexa- und/oder Octadecanthiol, mit einer bevorzugten Konzentration von etwa 6-12 g/l gelöst. Zum Ansetzen dieser Emulsion wird zunächst der Emulgator in einer bestimmten Menge an Wasser gelöst. Diese Lösung wird nun gründlich durchmischt und vorzugsweise auf eine Temperatur von etwa 42-49 DEG C erwärmt. Anschließend wird der Inhibitor zugegeben. Die entstehende Lösung wird dann so lange weiter durchmischt, bis eine gleichmäßige milchige Emulsion entsteht. Zu passivierende Silber- und Kupferoberflächen werden zunächst mit dieser wässrigen Emulsion behandelt und anschließend mit Wasser abgespült, wobei die Temperaturen der Emulsion und des Wassers so gewählt werden, dass sie oberhalb des Inhibitor-Schmelzpunktes liegen.

In order to prepare said emulsion, the emulsifier is first dissolved in a certain amount of water. Said solution is then thoroughly mixed and is preferably heated to a temperature ranging from about 42 to 49°, whereupon the inhibitor is added. The resulting solution is then further mixed until a uniform milky emulsion is obtained. Disclosed is a passivator and lubricant for gold, silver, and copper surfaces and corresponding alloy surfaces. Said passivator and lubricant comprises an aqueous emulsion with a linear fatty alcohol as an emulsifier, especially at least one C12-C14 fatty alcohol containing about 8 ethoxy units. Preferably, the concentration of the fatty alcohol amounts to about 25 to 35 g/l. An organic hydrophobic thiol compound, particularly hexadecanethiol and/or octadecanethiol, is dissolved in said aqueous emulsion as an inhibitor at a preferred concentration of about 6 to 12 g/l. In order to prepare said emulsion, the emulsifier is first dissolved in a certain amount of water. Said solution is then thoroughly mixed and is preferably heated to a temperature ranging from about 42 to 49°, whereupon the inhibitor is added. The resulting solution is then further mixed until a uniform milky emulsion is obtained. Silver and copper surfaces that are to be passivated are initially treated with said aqueous emulsion and are then rinsed with water, the temperatures of the emulsion and the water being selected so as to exceed the melting point of the inhibitor.

A viscous fluid, such as heavy crude oil which is too viscous to enable it to be pumped from a flowing phase of a reservoir into and along a pipeline for delivery to a refinery or other storage facility, may be contacted with a formulation to reduce its viscosity. The formulation comprises a polymeric material AA which includes -O- moieties pendent from a polymeric backbone thereof and said material is optionally cross-linked. In one embodiment, the formulation may comprise polyvinyl alcohol. In an alternative embodiment, the formulation may comprise a cross-linked polymeric material, such as cross-linked polyvinyl alcohol. After the viscous composition has been transported to a desired location, it may be separated from the other components.
