Foamed plastic from a roll is passed between charging electrodes, then on through the space between two rollers, round which the covering sheets are fed. After dwelling on a conveyor long enough for the plastic to cool, the now-covered material passes out between discharge electrodes. The heat for melting the plastic foam is obtained by passing the covering sheets round heated rollers on their way to the layering rollers; auxiliary rollers tension the sheets before they are laid. When the heated covering sheets were applied to the foamed thermoplastic (polystyrene) under the pressure of rollers, the pressure eliminated undesirably many air spaces from the softened foam. In the present method a minimal pressure is exerted electrostatically.

In coating sheets with synthetic linear polymers as described in the parent Specification, the supporting surface for the sheet to which the molten polymer is applied is covered at least in part with a film of polytetrafluoroethylene to prevent adhesion of the polymer to the supporting surface. The supporting surface may be a rubber or synthetic rubber roller the working surface of which is coated with polytetrafluoroethylene film which may cover the entire surface, the ends or central positions only, or may form a pattern. The synthetic rubber of which the roller is made may be vulcanized chloroprene, butadiene-styrene, butadiene-acrylonitrile, or chlorsulphonated solid ethylene polymers. The synthetic linear polymer may be polythene, chlorinated polythene, ethylene-vinyl acetate polymer which may be hydrolyzed, polystyrene, or a polyamide resin. Wood, paper, or metal sheets such as steel plates may be coated.

Porous multilayer articles and methods of making are disclosed. Multicomponent polymeric fibers are introduced into a forming chamber and are deposited onto a first porous substrate. The multicomponent fibers are then bonded to each other to form a porous coherent web, and the porous coherent web is bonded to the first porous substrate, so as to form a porous multilayer article. The porous coherent web contains particles that are bonded to the multicomponent fibers of the web. The particles in the porous coherent web may be e.g. abrasive, absorbent, etc.

A system for applying reinforcement material to an existing structure , the system comprising:a work rail adapted to be temporarily secured to a bottom surface of the structure;adhesive applying apparatus supported by the work rail, the adhesive applying apparatus being adapted to form an adhesive layer on the bottom surface of the structure adjacent the work rail; andreinforcement material applying apparatus supported by the work rail, the reinforcement material applying apparatus being adapted to apply reinforcement material to the adhesive layer formed on the bottom surface of the structure.2. A complex-shaped, three-dimensional fiber reinforced composite structure may be formed by using counteracting pressures applied to a structural lay-up of wetted fibers. The wetted fibers are arranged on pressurizable members and may be configured to include internal structural features, such as shear webs. A reinforcement stiffener may be located adjacent to at least one of the pressurizable members and the wetted fibers that form the internal structural feature. The reinforcement stiffener includes a modulus of elasticity that is substantially higher than a modulus of elasticity of the resin used to wet the fibers. In one embodiment, the reinforcement stiffener may be received in a pocket of one of the pressurizable members and may include a releasing agent that permits removal of the stiffener after the composite structure has been pressurized and cured.

The present invention relates to an absorbent structure, preferably for use in absorbent products, such as used in the food, consumer, household, building and construction, beauty and medical industry, and as used in the personal hygiene industry. The substantially cellulose free absorbent structures continuously immobilise absorbent polymer material via initial smaller pockets and subsequently larger compartments allowing excellent fluid management of the absorbent polymer material in dry, partially and fully liquid loaded state. Preferably such absorbent structure volume increases are result of temporary secondary attachment patterns made in combination with substantially permanent primary attachment grids allowing the release of bigger volumes from the initial smaller volumes by detachment of the secondary attachments. Furthermore the absorbent structure according to an embodiment of the invention non-homogeneously swells to form a liquid-managing surface structure as a result of exposing the absorbent structure to liquid. The present invention foresees in the need for improved flexible, thin, lightweight absorbent structures which overcome the absorbency problems of the prior art during absorption, distribution and retention of liquids with optimal fit.

A lamination, apparatus laminates sheet members including at least one of an electrode and a separator. The lamination apparatus includes a table on which the sheet members are laminated, a clamper that presses an assembled laminate of the sheet members laminated on the table; a clamper drive unit that horizontally-rotates and vertically-moves the clamper, a level adjuster that moves the table downward relative to the clamper according to a lamination progress of the sheet members. After a new sheet member is laminated on the assembled laminate pressed downward by the clamper, the clamper drive unit lifts up the clamper above the new sheet member while rotating the clamper and then moves the clamper downward to press the new sheet member from above.
