Organoboron compounds are described that upon exposure to light absorb light and isomerize and form a dark-colored isomer. The dark-colored isomer converts back to the colorless isomer upon removal of light, or exposure to oxygen or heat. Such compounds can be added into polymeric matrices such as films. Some elimination products are polycyclic aromatic molecules wherein a number of aromatic C—C moieties have been replaced by a B—N moiety to form azaborine compounds with interesting properties such as electronic, photophysical, luminescent, as well as chemical properties. Examples of polymer films that were doped with such compounds are shown wherein irradiated portions of the polymer film luminesce. The invention provides three-coordinated organoboron compounds that are useful for photoluminescence and electroluminescence. Compounds of the invention include light emitters, preferably emitting intense blue light, electron transporters, hole transporters and hole injectors.
