Abstract of the Disclosure A drying oil such as isomerised linseed oil, dehydrated castor oil or the like oil which has an iodine value of more than 140 and a content of conjugated double bonds of less than 50% is reacted with isopropenylphenyl 1 and/or oligomers thereof, preferably in an amount, by weight of 0.1 - 2 times as great as that of the drying oil in the presence of a small amount Or an acid at a tmeperature of 65 - 150°C for 0.5 - 3 hours. By the reaction, isopropenylphenol and/or its oligomers are introduced to the drying oil while the double bonds of the oil are retained. The thus introduced oil is further reacted with a phenol or phenols under strongly acidic conditions to introduce the phenols thereto. The drying oil which has been introduced with the isopropenylphenol and/or its oligomers and also with the phenols is mixed with a phenol or phenols and then reacted with formaldehyde to give a modified phenolic rosin. This phenolic resin is useful for making a phenolic laminate with improved flexibility punching quality and water resistance.

The invention provides a surface-treated copper foil which can sufficiently ensure adhesive strength with a low-dielectric substrate used in forming a printed wiring board for high-frequency applications and can minimize transmission losses. There is provided a surface-treated copper foil for a low-dielectric substrate which is used in bonded relationship to a low-dielectric substrate, which is characterized in that a nodular-treated layer constituted by bump-like copper particles is formed on a surface of the copper foil and that ultrafine copper particles are caused to precipitate on the whole surface of the nodular-treated layer and adhere thereto and the roughness value Rz of the surface is 1.0 to 6.5 μm. The surface color of the surface-treated copper foil has L* of not more than 50, a* of not more than 20 and b* of not more than 15. A passivated layer containing at least one kind selected from the group consisting of zinc and nickel is provided on surfaces of the ultrafine copper particles which are caused to precipitate on the whole of the surfaces of the bump-like copper particles of the nodular-treated layer and adhere thereto.

A surface treated copper foil for use in a printed wiring board which has been subjected to a roughening treatment and a rust inhibiting treatment for its surface, wherein the rust inhibiting treatment has been carried out by a method comprising forming a zinc-copper-tin ternary alloy plating rust-inhibiting layer on the surface of a copper foil, forming an electrolytic chromate layer on the surface of said rust-inhibiting layer, forming a layer of a silane coupling agent adsorbed on said electrolytic chromate layer, and drying the copper foil for 2 to 6 seconds under a condition wherein the temperature thereof is in the range of 105°C to 200°C. The surface treated copper foil takes full advantage of the effect of a silane coupling agent which is generally used in a copper foil having a zinc-copper-tin ternary alloy plating rust-inhibiting layer, and thereby exhibits a deterioration percentage for the resistance to hydrochloric acid of 10 % or less even with respect to a copper foil circuit being 0.2 mm wide and further is excellent in moisture resistance characteristics and heat resistance characteristics.

The average temperature increase rate in the temperature range of 30-400° C. in a temperature increase process in the primary recrystallization step is more than 50° C./sec but not more than 1000° C./sec.
