Chemical deposition of nickel coatings on plastic articles

Process for chemically depositing nickel coatings on non-metallic articles comprises (a) mechanically and/or chemically purifying the article, (b) activating by treatment with an aqs. palladium salt soln., (c) reducing the palladium salt to pallodium, and (d) immersing in a bath at 30-70 deg.C. contng. nickel ions, hypophosite ions, buffer materials, and a phosphoric acid compd. (I) or (II). X and Y=H or C1-6 alkyl; R1 and R2 = PO3H2 or COOH, or group (III); at least one PO3H2 group being present in (I); Z = H OH or NH2; and R = H, C1-6 alkyl or group (III). - The process is used for depositing nickel coatings on non-metallic articles, esp. plastic articles such as ABS resins and polypropylene. Addn. of phosphonic acid compd. to the bath enables uniform coatings to be more rapidly formed, and the bath has improved stability.

Water to be softened is passed through a cation exchanger layer which is removed after exhaustion and replaced by a layer of uncharged cation exchanger. An exchangeable insert for an ion exchanger-based water softener consists of 2 support layers enclosing an intermediate layer of powdery exchanger. A water-softener is also claimed and consists of a container which is divided into 2 compartments by a partition which is formed, at least partly, as a water-permeable support layer. One compartment contains a closable inlet for the cation exchanger and a supply-conduit for hard water. The 2nd compartment contains a discharge outlet for soft water. The water softener need not be regenerated with NaCl.

The disclosure relates to a storable polyol pre-mixture for making flame-retardant polyurethane foam plastics consisting of a mixture of a polyester polyol or polyether polyol and an ammonium polyphosphate as a flame-retardant agent. The pre-mixture contains more particularly an ammonium polyphosphate which corresponds to the general formula (I) H(n-m)+2(NH4)mPnO3n+1 (I) in which n stands for an integral average value of 100 to 1000, m stands for a whole number of up to n+2 and m/n stands for a value of about 1, has an acid number of 0.01 to about 5 mg KOH/g, contains 0.01 to 0.5 mass % water and 0.5 to about 15 mass % water-soluble fractions in water at 25 DEG C.

Na2SO4 or Na2CO3 (V) and 2-10 wt. % of the Na salt of a poly-(alpha-hydroxyacrylic acid) (VI), the 1 wt. % soln. of the free acid in 2N aqs. NAOH at 25 degrees C have rel. viscosity of 0.05-0.25. The compsn. produces less corrosion (e.g. than that of DT 2219804). Redn. of the (I) content by inclusion of (VI) does not affect the compsn's cleaning power but reduces the phosphate effluent content. Storability without lump formation is increased.

1.
