A wheel axle suspension of a vehicle, comprises an axle body having a rectangular cross section, a flexible trailing arm extending in a longitudinal direction of the vehicle and crossing the axle body substantially perpendicular, and at least one clamping strap assembly for clamping the axle body and the trailing arm together. The trailing arm has a front spring portion extending in the longitudinal direction of the vehicle and is provided with an axle seating portion adjoining the front spring portion at a rear end thereof. The axle seating portion comprises a longitudinal portion extending substantially in line with the front spring portion, and a downwardly extending portion extending substantially perpendicular to the longitudinal portion. The axle body is received in the axle seating portion with the upper side and rear side facing the longitudinal portion and the downwardly extending portion respectively. The axle seating portion of the trailing arm has an axle body facing surface having three engagement areas engaging the axle body respectively at the front upper corner, the rear upper corner and at a region at or adjacent the lower rear corner of the axle body. Between said engagement areas there is a clearance between the axle body facing surface of the axle seating portion and the upper side and rear side of the axle body.

Bügelmuttern werden an den Bügelschenkeln bereitgestellt, um den Achskörper, den Achsblock und den Längsträger zusammen festzuziehen. Ein Klemmteil wird auf derjenigen Seite des Trägers bereitgestellt, die von dem Achskörper weg zeigt, wobei der Klemmteil Seitenabschnitte hat, die sich über die Seitenkanten des Längsträgers hinaus erstrecken. Die Seitenabschnitte sind mit Bohrungen versehen, durch die sich die Endabschnitte der Bügelschenkel erstrecken, wobei der Klemmteil ein Gegenstück darstellt, um den Achskörper, den Achsblock und den Längsträger zusammen festzuziehen. The main control parameter is preferably the gas pressure in gas spring bellows (6) for the axle suspension.

The arched portion extends around a part of the circumference of the axle body. The legs of the strap are tensioned with respect to the trailing arm, such that the axle body is clamped between the arched portion of the strap and said concave side of the axle seating portion of the trailing arm. The axle body is arranged directly against the concave side of the axle seating portion of the trailing arm. The front leg of the strap extends towards the front through or along the side of the trailing arm and is supported at the front side of the axle seating portion. The rear leg of the strap extends through or along the side of the trailing arm towards the rear and is supported at the rear side of the axle seating portion.

A device for securing a wheel axle to the chassis of a vehicle, comprises two bearing brackets (6, 7) secured to the chassis (1, 2) on either side of the vehicle, two carrier arms (8, 9), which are each pivotably secured to an associated bearing bracket and to which the wheel axle is secured, a connecting bar (11) which extends between the two bearing brackets and the ends of which are secured to the bearing brackets, and two struts (12, 13), each of which are connected at one end to the connecting bar in the central region of the connecting bar by means of a threaded connection comprising a single threaded bolt (14, 15) and, from there, extend obliquely upwards in order to be secured to the chassis at the other end. To increase the force which can be transmitted, at the location of the threaded connection between a strut (12, 13) and the connecting bar (11) at least the connecting bar or the strut is provided with a recess, and furthermore there is an element which is coupled to the strut or connecting bar at least in the transverse direction of the threaded bolt (14, 15) and forms an elevation with respect to the strut or connecting bar which engages in the recess.

A wheel axle suspension for suspending an axle body of a wheel axle from a vehicle, comprises on both sides of the vehicle a trailing arm which extends in the longitudinal direction of the vehicle. The axle body is attached to the trailing arms. The trailing arms are each hingedly connected at the front in the direction of travel of the vehicle to a bearing bracket which is arranged on the vehicle chassis. The wheel axle suspension furthermore comprises a pneumatic spring which is operational between the trailing arm and the chassis. A pneumatic spring support arm is provided, which is coupled to the axle body for supporting an underside of the pneumatic spring. A wheel axle suspension for a vehicle comprises on both sides of the vehicle a trailing arm which extends in the longitudinal direction of the vehicle, a thin walled tubular axle body, which has attachment regions where the axle body is attached to the trailing arms. Each trailing arm is hingedly connected at the front, viewed in the direction of travel of the vehicle, to a bearing bracket which is arranged on the vehicle chassis. The suspension also comprises a pneumatic spring which is operational between each of the trailing arms and the chassis. The wheel axle suspension furthermore comprises clamp bodies for clamping the axle body at the attachment regions thereof so as to attach the axle body to the trailing arms, as well as tensioning elements for providing the clamp force for the clamp bodies. The clamp bodies engage the axle body over a certain longitudinal distance of the attachment region and around virtually its entire circumference. The axle body has a substantially circular cross section in the clamping regions and is provided with an elongated indent in each of the clamping regions. The indent extends in a longitudinal direction of the axle body. At least one of the clamp bodies is provided with a protrusion that engages in the elongated indent.

A method for manufacturing a wheel axle of a utility vehicle such as a trailer, semi-trailer or a truck, wherein the wheel axle comprises a hollow axle body comprising a steel tubular wall having a thickness t and having a clamping region adapted to be clamped in use between clamping parts of the vehicle suspension by means of tensioning means. An interlocking recess is formed in the clamping region. The interlocking recess is formed by a forming process wherein a stamp member is pressed into the outer surface of the tubular wall so as to form an indent. The dimension of the stamp and the pressing force are such that the surface pressure on the stamped surface portion of the tubular wall locally exceeds the yield point to form the indent and the pressing force is such that the tubular wall portion adjacent the interlocking recess is plastically sagging over a distance inwards which is at most corresponding to the thickness t of the tubular wall. Preferably the sagging distance inwards is within a range of 0 to 0,5 times the thickness t of the tubular wall. In an alternative method the interlocking recess is formed by friction drilling a blind hole in the tubular wall of the axle body.

An axle clamping arrangement (100) is adapted to secure an axle body (10) to a trailing arm (1) in an air sprung wheel axle suspension for a vehicle. The axle clamping arrangement (100) comprises a first clamping member (7), a second clamping member (9) and a tensioning link (15) associated with the first clamping member (7) and the second clamping member (9). The tensioning link (15) comprises at least one tensioning rod (16). The axle clamping arrangement (100) further comprises an extension mechanism which is adapted to increase the distance between the first clamping member (7) and the second clamping member (9) at the location of the tensioning link (15) to cause a predetermined extension of the tensioning rod (16), thereby providing the tensioning rod (16) with a pretension for providing the clamping force for the axle clamping arrangement (100) to secure the axle body (10) to the trailing arm (1).

The invention relates to a vehicle axle suspension comprising :- a tubular axle body(3) having a longitudinal axis;- resilient suspension arms (5) which extend in the longitudinal direction of the vehicle on both sides of the vehicle, and which cross the axle body substantially perpendicular, each suspension arm having a curved portion (9) with a concave underside forming an axle recess in which the axle body is received, and each suspension arm being hingedly connectable at the front, viewed in the direction of travel of the vehicle, to a bearing bracket arranged on the vehicle chassis; -two intermediate members (13), each intermediate member being positioned in said axle recess between the axle body and the curved portion of one of the respective suspension arms, wherein each intermediate member has a concave underside which matches with the outer contour of the tubular axle body; -a pneumatic spring for each suspension arm which is operational between the respective suspension arm and the vehicle chassis; -a clamping assembly (17, 18, 19) associated with each suspension arm, wherein the axle body, the respective intermediate member and the suspension arm are retained solely by the clamping assembly.

The axle lift furthermore comprises an actuator having an underside mounted to the support and having an upper side facing the trailing arm to act on the trailing arm to lift it.

A wheel axle suspension of a vehicle, comprises an axle body having a rectangular cross section, a flexible trailing arm extending in a longitudinal direction of the vehicle and crossing the axle body substantially perpendicular, and at least one clamping strap assembly for clamping the axle body and the trailing arm together. The trailing arm has a front spring portion extending in the longitudinal direction of the vehicle and is provided with an axle seating portion adjoining the front spring portion at a rear end thereof. The axle seating portion comprises a longitudinal portion extending substantially in line with the front spring portion, and a downwardly extending portion extending substantially perpendicular to the longitudinal portion. The axle body is received in the axle seating portion with the upper side and rear side facing the longitudinal portion and the downwardly extending portion respectively. The axle seating portion of the trailing arm has an axle body facing surface having three engagement areas engaging the axle body respectively at the front upper corner, the rear upper corner and at a region at or adjacent the lower rear corner of the axle body. Between said engagement areas there is a clearance between the axle body facing surface of the axle seating portion and the upper side and rear side of the axle body.
