The present invention relates to a composition for the prevention, alleviation, or treatment of dry eye syndrome, the composition comprising an Achyranthes root extract or a fraction thereof as an active ingredient. The Achyranthes root extract or fraction thereof according to the present invention can not only reduce expression of the IL-8 gene which is increased by fine dust and increase expression of the mucin-1 protein which is reduced by fine dust, but can also increase tear secretion which is reduced by dry eye syndrome and suppress changes in the shape of the cornea in which the circular shape thereof is bent and twisted, and thus may be usefully applied as a drug or health functional food for the prevention, alleviation, or treatment of dry eye syndrome.
