A pouch-type secondary battery according to the present invention is characterized by comprising: an electrode assembly having an electrode lead attached thereto; and a pouch packing material which accommodates the electrode assembly such that a portion of the electrode lead may be outwardly exposed and which has a sealing portion formed along an edge thereof, wherein the sealing portion has a characteristic length of 10 to 19mm2/mm. According to the present invention, the characteristic length of the sealing portion of the pouch-type secondary battery is limited to a fixed range, thus limiting as much as possible a reduction in capacity of a secondary battery caused by the area occupied by the sealing portion while improving reliability against moisture penetration which might occur due to the long-term use of the secondary battery.

The secondary battery according to the present invention comprises: an electrode assembly including an electrode tab; an electrode lead attached to the electrode tab and including at least one lead hole; a pouch case accommodating the electrode assembly in such a manner that the electrode lead is withdrawn to the outside; and a venting pattern portion formed in an area corresponding to the lead hole, and sealing tape provided in such a manner as to be interposed between the electrode lead and the inner surface of the pouch case. According to the present invention, the sealing state of the pouch case is swiftly released in the event that gas is generated in the pouch case due to an abnormality such as excess current flowing through the secondary battery caused by abnormal operation of a protective circuit, and thus the secondary battery can be used safely.
