Embodiments of the invention comprise a multi-input range box driven by multiple electric drives. Range shifting involves momentarily increasing the current through all but a given motor, to a level that will carry the entire load, comprising specified constant power. Simultaneously, torque of the given motor is reduced to zero. The given motor is then disconnected from supplying power, is synchronized to the input speed of the new speed range, and is then engaged for the new range. The above sequence is then repeated for each remaining motors, in turn. The motor current is re-equalized for all of the motors, after all the motors have been connected to provide power at the new range. Thus, there is no interruption in power flow during a range shift, and the motors are always used to deliver power, rather than to serve as a brake.

A crankshaft of an engine, an output shaft of a first electric motor, and an output shaft of a second electric motor are directly or indirectly connected to each other mechanically. When the engine is started, a vibration reduction torque is caused to act on the crankshaft that is set in the form of a periodic torque based on the crank angle, so that torque pulsation of the engine is suppressed. The output torque of the first electric motor is controlled in accordance with the sum of a motoring torque and a part of the vibration reduction torque. The output torque of the second electric motor is controlled in accordance with the sum of its essential output torque for causing the vehicle to travel and a torque for compensating for a shortage of the vibration reduction torque that occurs because a part of the vibration reduction torque is output from the first electric motor.

A method for disconnecting an electrical machine connected with the wheels of a vehicle's drive axle by means of a dog clutch having intermeshing couplers includes, upon receipt of a command to disengage, two successively activated steps. In the first step, a torque equal to a calibrated threshold of a target torque (d) is applied to the electrical machine so to effect a zero torque between the couplers. During this step, a dog clutch actuator is deactivated so to allow the dog clutch to disengage from the electrical machine as quickly as possible. Next, a torque having a value determined according to a slope whose value ranges from the calibrated threshold of the target torque (d) to zero is applied to the electrical machine.

A multi-port reconfigurable battery has at least one bank of statically joined series connected battery cells, each including a positive and negative pole connected through switches to respective output connections on at least one port. Processor controlled switches reconfigure the cells to provide power for electrical loads on one or more ports and simultaneously provide charging on one or more other ports. An alternative configuration divides groups of series connected cells into separate battery banks that permit other configurations. Ports are configurable to share one electrically common connection with other ports providing a simplified configuration (multi-tap reconfigurable battery). Applications include selectable motor speed control and battery regeneration schemes matched to motor output, and single or multiphase AC power output at selectable frequencies for use as an Uninterruptible Power Supply. The battery is also described as a power source for a forced-air induction system (e.g. electric supercharger) for a combustion engine.

An electric motor assembly includes a rotor hub, and a rotor supported on the rotor hub. The rotor hub has first and second hub portions, and the rotor has first and second annular rotor segments supported for rotation on the respective first and second hub portions. Each of the rotor segments has a respective set of magnets spaced circumferentially therearound. The rotor hub and the rotor segments are configured so that at least one of the rotor segments moves about the axis of rotation relative to the other of the rotor segments as the rotor hub rotates. The movement of the at least one of the rotor segments is an amount that increases as the speed of the rotor hub increases to reduce back electromotive force. The movement may be due to centrifugal force, which increases as speed increases, without requiring a control system to effect the movement.
