Manually-assisted automated indexing of images using facial recognition

The present method relates to the manual assistance for the automated indexing ( 100 ) of a collection of images using facial recognition. In a first automated indexing step, automated indexing of faces within a collection of images is performed, creating sets of faces each of which comprises faces that are determined by the automated process to be representative of the same person. In a second splitting step ( 200 ), sets are displayed to an operator, who determines whether there are false-positive associations within a set. If false-positive associations are found, the faces representing different people are manually split into different sets, hi this way, there will be no false-positive associations within the collection of images, hi a third merging step ( 300 ), sets that have some degree of similarity are presented to the operator, who determines whether the two sets comprise representations of the same person. If so, the two sets are manually merged, thereby eliminating false-negative errors. In this way, all of the faces in the image collection can be completely and accurately indexed.

Optically the method includes using estimated locations in combination with the vector distance between facial coefficient vectors to track persons.

A scene image is taken with a camera system configured to measure five or more different bands, or channels, of the visible light spectrum. The light sources can include narrow-band colored LED lights, possibly combined with color filters to refine the spectral distributions. In each configuration, a beam splitter assembly is used to align two or more color cameras having different color filters placed over their lenses. By use of such techniques, a single multispectral photograph of a subject provides enough information to recover both the full-color reflectance and the surface normals on a per-pixel basis.

The collected image is scanned for skin-tone and/or texture, then the method eliminates the background of the image. The method then analyzes the curvature of the image. The next step is body part detection for inappropriate body parts. The image is then given a score based on all of the above steps. If the score is above a point, the image is flagged. If it is below a preselected point, the image is released. If the score is between the two points, it is withheld for further analysis.

A determination of which object is in the direction of the user's gaze is made from the photograph and whether or not the gaze is on the correct object in the sequence of the passcode. A recognition test which would be performed in an actual component mounting machine thereby becomes unnecessary. Data readjustment operation which would be required when a result of recognition test is determined to be inappropriate is precluded, so that work efficiency can be enhanced by diminishing work load stemming from preparation of image recognition data.
