A method of checking for a stall condition in a processor is disclosed, the method including inserting an inline instruction sequence into a thread, the inline instruction sequence configured to read the result from a timing register during processing of a first instruction and store the result in a first general purpose register, wherein the timing register functions as a timer for the processor; and read the results from the timing register during processing of a second instruction and store the results in a second general purpose register, wherein the second instruction is the next consecutive instruction after the first instruction. The inline thread sequence may be inserted in sequence with the thread and further configured to compare the difference between the result in the first and second general purpose register to a programmable threshold.

A method and circuit for implementing lane shuffle for fault-tolerant communication links, and a design structure on which the subject circuit resides are provided. Shuffle hardware logic steers a set of virtual data lanes onto a set of physical optical lanes, steering around all lanes that are detected as bad during link initialization training. A mask status register is loaded with a mask of lane fail information during link training, which flags the bad lanes, if any. The shuffle hardware logic uses a shift template, where each position in the starting template is a value representing the corresponding lane position. The shift template is cascaded through a set of shifters controlled by the fail mask.

A root cause analysis engine uses event survival times and gradual deletion of events to improve analysis accuracy and reduce the number of required calculations. Certainty factors of relevant rules are recalculated every time notification of an event is received. The calculation results are held in a rule memory in the analysis engine. Each event has a survival time, and when the time has expired, that event is deleted from the rule memory. Events held in the rule memory can be deleted without affecting other events held in the rule memory. The analysis engine can then re-calculate the certainty factor of each rule by only performing the re-calculation with respect to affected rules that are related with the deleted event. The calculation cost can be reduced because analysis engine processes events incrementally or decrementally.

A computer implemented method for implementing scalable input/output (I/O) function level error detection , isolation , and reporting , the method comprising:detecting, via an I/O hub, an error in a communication initiated between a function and a system memory, the communication including an I/O request from an application, and the function executing on an I/O adapter;preventing future communication between the function and the system memory in response to the detecting; andnotifying the application that the error in communication occurred in response to the detecting.2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the I/O adapter is a Peripheral Component Interconnect Express (PCIe) adapter.3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the I/O hub sets a flag in the system memory indicating that one of the one or more I/O adapters is in an error state in response to the detecting claim 1 , and sends an interrupt to a computer processor claim 1 , the interrupt causing a monitoring thread to initialize and check the status of the flag.4. The method of wherein the notifying is responsive to the monitoring thread detecting that the flag indicates that the I/O adapter is in an error state.5. The method of wherein one or more bits are set in the I/O hub to indicate that one of the one or more I/O adapters has entered an error state in response to the detecting.6.
