Adding prescriptive correction to eyepieces for see-through head wearable displays

Номер: GB0002555013A

An eyepiece for a head wearable display includes a curved lightguide component, a curved see-through component, an output coupler, and a prescription layer. The curved lightguide component guides display light received at an input region and releases the display light along an eye-ward direction in a viewing region. The output coupler is disposed at the viewing region to redirect the display light towards the eye-ward direction for output from the curved lightguide component. The output coupler is at least partially transmissive to ambient light incident through a world-facing side such that the viewing region is see-through. The curved see-through component is mated to the world-facing side of the curved lightguide component. The prescription layer has a first side mated to an eye-facing side of the curved lightguide component and a second side having a curvature that introduces prescriptive lensing to both the ambient light and the display light.

The invention provides head- coupled area-of-interest visual display apparatus particularly for ground- based craft-flight simulators. The apparatus provides binocular, pseudo- collimated vision of a display for both pilot and co-pilot projected onto the inside of a part-spherical shell, which carries a concave retro-reflective screen and surrounds the two pilots. The displayed scene covers an area of interest centred upon each pilot's line of view. A separate image generator is used for each pilot and may be of the computer generated image, laser- scanned model or closed-circuit television type. For the pseudo- collimated viewing, the same image is projected for left and right eyes for each pilot from points on a respective pilot helmet, above the pilot's eye position. Line scan apparatus is mounted in the pilots' cockpit; line image transmission is by fibre optic light guide ribbons; and frame scan apparatus is mounted on the two pilots' helmets. A method for ocular stabilization of video images, suitable for use in augmented reality head mounted displays, has the steps of obtaining binocular eye-gaze directions of the left 501-L and right 501-R eyes of a user of a wearable head-mountable device (HMD) (102, figure 1a) using an eye-tracking device, while simultaneously capturing video images in a forward field of view with a forward-facing video camera 502 of the HMD. A wearable computing device or a head-mounted display (HMD) may be configured to track the gaze axis of an eye of the wearer. In particular, the device may be configured to observe movement of a wearer's pupil and, based on the movement, determine inputs to a user interface. For example, using eye gaze detection, the HMD may change a tracking rate of a displayed virtual image based on where the user is looking. Gazing at the center of the HMD field of view may, for instance, allow for fine movements of the virtual display. Gazing near an edge of the HMD field of view may provide coarser movements.
