The composition of the invention shows excellent anti-fretting properties under the conditions of ordinary temperature to low temperature (e.g., −50° C., preferably about −40° C.).

The disclosure generally provides branched diester compounds having exceptional low-temperature and flow properties. The disclosure also provides uses of the branched diester compounds in lubricant compositions, for example, as a base oil, and in other applications where their low-temperature and flow properties can be employed beneficially. The disclosure also provides efficient and green methods for making the branched diester compounds. In certain embodiments, a vegetable oil-based diester (1,6-hexyldioleate) was branched with propanoic acid (C3) using a green synthetic approach involving solvent-free and catalyst-free epoxide ring opening followed by in situ normal esterification. A total of three branched ester derivatives possessing varied numbers of internal protruding branched ester groups and hydroxyl groups were obtained. All of the pure branched derivatives were comprised of mixtures of positional isomers and/or stereoisomers. Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) showed that regardless of the composition inhomogeneity of each branched derivative, crystallization was suppressed completely in all of the branched compounds, and they all demonstrated glass transitions below −65° C. Without being bound by any theory, it is believed that this unique thermal behavior is attributed to the internal protruding branched moieties and hydroxyl groups, which dramatically slowed down mass transfer starting with the least branched compound (2-branched derivative). The viscosity of the branched compounds was one order of magnitude larger than that of the starting di ester due to the increased branching and increased resistance to flow associated with hydrogen bonding introduced by the OH groups. An improved disk drive system using a non-ferrofluid conductive lubricant is disclosed. In the disk drive system, there is a plurality of critically spaced magnetic disks rotated by a disk motor. A spindle shaft, which is retained by the spindle sleeve, couples to the disk motor and to the plurality of magnetic disks for rotation. The spindle shaft and spindle sleeve uses a bearing, which is lubricated by a non-ferrofluid conductive lubricant. The lubricant is used to prevent electrostatic charge build up during operation of the disk drive system. The lubricant may be either a non-polar oil or a ball bearing grease and further comprising either a metal caged fullerenes compound, STADIS-450, ASA-3, or Polyfloe 130. One particular type of lubricant is an emeraldine salt of polyanilin produced according to the steps of first reacting a solution of HCL and ammonium persulfate into a solution of HCL and analine to form a polymer. Next, the polymer is mixed with ammonium hydroxide and then is prepared to have a molecular weight of 1,000-20,000. Finally, the polymer is mixed with dodecyl benzylsulfonc acid or camphor sulfonic acid until the emeraldine salt is formed.

The invention comprises an additive for lubricating oils (see Group III), said additive being a compound obtained by the sulphurization or sulphurization and phosphorization of the unsaponifiable matter extracted from saponified wool grease, or a metal salt of such a sulphurized and phosphorized compound. The unsaponifiable matter may be sulphurized by heating with sulphur and the reaction may be assisted by adding a small amount of sulphur monochloride or sulphur dichloride. The sulphurized product may then be phosphorized by reacting it with a phosphorus compound, e.g. a phosphorus sulphide or halide and particularly phosphorus pentasulphide or sesquisulphide, e.g. by heating with either of the latter at 220 DEG to 250 DEG F. Alternatively, the unsaponifiable matter may be reacted with sulphur chlorides in oil or an inert solvent and the chlorine then replaced by sulphur, or phosphorus and sulphur, by reacting the product in a suitable solvent with sodium sulphide or polysulphide or the sodium salt of an organic dithiophosphoric acid. The sulphurization of the unsaponifiable material may be carried out in the presence of a vulcanization accelerator, e.g. mercaptobenzothiazole, benzothiazole disulphide, tetramethyl and tetraethyl thiuram disulphides or mixtures of these compounds with diphenyl guanidine. It is preferred to carry out the sulphurization in the presence of an aliphatic, alicyclic, or reduced heterocyclic secondary amine such as dicyclohexylamine, diethanolamine, or morpholine and the sulphurization is facilitated by carrying it out in the presence of mineral oil.
