A refractory includes a cement, a binder and a matrix. The matrix comprises both stainless steel fibers and organic fibers. The refractory can be easily cast, without additional steel reinforcement, into large fire wall 16 panels 10 capable of meeting the requirements of testing conducted in accordance with ASTM E-119, Standard Test Methods for Fire Tests of Building Construction and Materials in support of IEEE Std. 979-1994, Guide for Substation Fire Protection . The fire wall 16 assembly withstood the fire endurance test without passage of flame and gases hot enough to ignite cotton waste during a four-hour fire exposure. The assembly also withstood a 45 psi water stream for five minutes immediately following the four-hour fire exposure period. This is a stringent mechanical requirement, as all fire walls 16 must maintain their integrity before, during and after a fire, per the Universal Building Code's definition of a true fire wall 16.

Provided is a method for stably manufacturing high-density sintered LiCoO 2 . Said method uses a CIP-and-sintering method, which has a forming step using cold hydrostatic pressing and a sintering step. The pressing force is at least 1000 kg/cm 2 , the sintering temperature is between 1050° C. and 1120° C., and the sintering time is at least two hours. This makes it possible to stably manufacture sintered LiCoO 2 with a relative density of at least 90%, a resistivity of at most 3 kΩ·cm, and a mean grain diameter between 20 and 50 μm.

A mixed powder was prepared by weighing Yb 2 O 3 and SrCO 3 in such a way that the molar ratio became 1:1. The resulting mixed powder was subjected to uniaxial pressure forming, so as to produce a disc-shaped compact. The compact was heat-treated in an air atmosphere, so that a complex oxide was synthesized. The resulting complex oxide was pulverized. After the pulverization, a slurry was taken out and was dried in a nitrogen gas stream, so as to produce a synthesized powder material. The resulting synthesized powder material was subjected to uniaxial pressure forming, so as to produce a disc-shaped compact. The resulting compact was fired by a hot-press method, so as to obtain a corrosion-resistant member for semiconductor manufacturing apparatus. The resulting corrosion-resistant member was made from a SrYb 2 O 4 .

The resulting product is maintained at the temperature between room temperature and 600° C.; and crystallization is achieved while irradiating the amorphous thin film or the thin film comprising the organic metal salt or the alkoxide salt on the substrate with ultraviolet light such as ultraviolet laser. In this manner, it becomes possible to produce an oriented Dion-Jacobson perovskite-type oxide thin film characterized in that thin film can be oriented on the substrate in a (001) direction.

The method also includes siliconizing a first portion of the boron carbide to siliconized boron carbide by contacting the green body with a molten silicon infiltrant, where the infiltrant has a temperature of about 1625° C. to about 1700° C. The method may further include dissolving a second portion of the boron carbide in the silicon infiltrant, where at least some of the dissolved boron carbide is reprecipated as smooth particulates.

A polycrystalline cubic boron nitride (PcBN) is fabricated using a process of overlaying layers of cubic boron nitride (cBN) powder, where the layers have cBN mixed with various concentrations of a ceramic. The process of fabricating the PcBN includes depositing, in a refractory capsule, a carbide, a cubic boron nitride (cBN), and a mixture of cBN and a ceramic, then applying a high pressure and high temperature (HPHT) to the content of the refractory capsule. During the depositing step of the process, the concentration of cBN in the mixture of the cBN and ceramic is lower than the concentration of cBN that is in the layer below it. Upon applying HPHT, the carbide first diffuses across the cBN layer, and then diffuses across the layer with the mixture of the cBN and ceramic. After HPHT ends and the content of the refractory capsule cools, the process yields a PcBN having layers with various concentrations of cBN, and at least one cBN layer with a ceramic material.

The ceramic particles and compositions can be shaped and chemically and materially augmented with enhancement particles in the liquid resin or gelatinous polymeric state before being pyrolyzed into ceramic components. The resulting ceramic components have a very smooth surface and are fully dense, not porous as ceramic components from the sol-gel process.

A method of making SiC nanowires comprising: (a) mixing silicon powder with a carbon-containing biopolymer and a catalyst at room temperature to form a mixture; and (b) heating said mixture to a pyrolyzing temperature sufficient to react said biopolymer and said silicon power to form SiC nanowires.
