The braking system has two metal friction rollers (8,10) mounted in a housing with a pivot action to bring either one or none of the rollers into contact with the tyre (54). The rollers (8,10) are coupled together by meshing gears (12, 14) to drive the rollers in opposite directions. Through friction contact with the tyre one roller (say 10) twists the elastomer strip (44) to store energy while the other roller enables the energy to be returned to the wheel. The elastomer strip is twisted by a gearing linked to the rollers. A friction wedge (6) blocks the roller action when they are lifted off the tyre and allows the stored energy to be retained. The pivot action of the roller mounting is controlled by a Bowden cable or by a mechanical sensor (86) on the bicycle chain. ADVANTAGE - Compact braking system, improved handling of bicycle.

The disc 4 is fast on the shaft 3, while the disc 8 is loose on the shaft 3 and has its lower part in the form of a worm-wheel driven by the electromotor through a worm 9. When winding by the electromotor, the disc 8 runs clockwise, and the ends of the pawl 10 bear respectively against the hub of the disc 8 and against one of the teeth 12 cast on the disc 4 and so couple the discs 8, 4 and thus rotate the shaft 3 and wind up the spring. When the machine is wound by hand, only the disc 4 rotates clockwise, the pawl 10 being thrown out of gear and the disc 8 remaining stationary. When the spring motor is wound up, the worm 9 automatically locks it against unwinding.

The invention concerns a spring barrel module having two chambers. A spring is located in the first chamber and a damper in the second chamber. The unidirectional damper is implemented by a clutch means that connects the damper plate to the spring shaft when the tightened spring is released, whereby the rotation of the damper slows down. Correspondingly, the clutch loosens the connection between the damper plate and the spring shaft when the spring is tightened. In low temperatures (e.g. below 0 ~C degrees) the damper fails to dampen the rotation. The unidirectional feature of the damper improves both usability and durability. Breakage of the mechanical components of the spring barrel is prevented by an overload clutch, which means that the spring barrel module will tolerate even relatively rough handling of the equipment.

The present application relates to the field of energy recovery and in particular to the use of shape memory alloys (SMA) for same. An energy recovery device is provided which comprises a one way drive mechanism for incrementally winding a spring. An SMA engine comprising a length of SMA material is fixed at a first end and connected at a second end to the one way drive mechanism. The SMA engine is housed in an immersion chamber and adapted to be sequentially filled with fluid to allow heating and/or cooling of the SMA engine to enable high frequency contractions and expansion. An output transmission is provided which is coupled to and driven by the spring. In this manner, repeated contractions of the SMA material incrementally wind the spring to store energy. The spring is restrained by a release mechanism which may be activated to allow the spring to drive an output transmission.

Yarn energy harvesters containing conducing nanomaterials (such as carbon nanotube (CNT) yarn harvesters) that electrochemically convert tensile or torsional mechanical energy into electrical energy. Stretched coiled yarns can generate 250 W/kg of peak electrical power when cycled up to 24 Hz, and can generate up to 41.2 J/kg of electrical energy per mechanical cycle. Unlike for other harvesters, torsional rotation produces both tensile and torsional energy harvesting and no bias voltage is required, even when electrochemically operating in salt water. Since homochiral and heterochiral coiled harvester yarns provide oppositely directed potential changes when stretched, both contribute to output power in a dual-electrode yarn. These energy harvesters were used in the ocean to harvest wave energy, combined with thermally-driven artificial muscles to convert temperature fluctuations to electrical energy, sewn into textiles for use as self-powered respiration sensors, and used to power a light emitting diode and to charge a storage capacitor. 1. The pushing pin wheel is rotatable such that rotation of the pushing pin wheel causes the leaf springs to flex from the rest state to a tension state Release of the tension (i.e., when the leaf springs return to the rest state from the tension state) causes rotation of the leaf spring housing which causes rotation of a corresponding release gear set and output drive. 1. A spring mechanism , comprising:a leaf spring housing;a plurality of leaf springs affixed with the leaf spring housing, the leaf springs being flexible between a rest state and tension state; anda winding mechanism operably engaged with the leaf springs for causing the leaf springs to flex from the rest state to the tension state.2. The spring mechanism as set forth in claim 1 , wherein the winding mechanism includes pushing pin wheel with a plurality of elongated pushing pins protruding therefrom claim 1 , the pushing pin wheel positioned proximate to the leaf spring housing such that each elongated pushing pin rests adjacent a leaf spring claim 1 , with the pushing pin wheel being rotatable such that rotation of the pushing pin wheel causes the leaf springs to flex from the rest state to the tension state.3.
