IDLER-ROLLER RECOIL DEVISE An idler recoil device is utilized for track-type vehicles. The idler recoil device protects a crawler track system from damage when some foreign object, such as a rock, is trapped between an endless chain link assembly and a chain supporting element of the crawler track system. An idler link is pivotally connected to a track frame of the crawler track system and a recoilable rear idler is rotatably positioned on an idler hub itself pivotally connected to said idler link. An increase in tension on said endless chain link assembly causes said idler hub to rotate away from said endless chain link assembly decreasing track path length and, consequently, tension. This rotation is resiliently resisted by a recoil pad mounted between said idler hub and said idler link. A tensile link prevents any recoil up to a preselected endless chain link assembly tension.

In a second aspect the articulation mechanism is active being powered by an actuator (94) to provide articulation steering. The articulated units may also be secured in parallel configuration for conventional skid-steering operation.

An endless track suspension is comprised of a suspension support beam having an idler wheel assembly connected to a respective one of opposed ends thereof. At least one of the idler wheel assemblies has an endless track binding mechanism. Support wheels are secured to the suspension support beam and project from a lower face thereof. A drive sprocket is secured elevated above the suspension support beam by a support arm. The drive sprocket is secured to a vehicle drive axle by a coupling ring. The drive sprocket, the support wheels and idler wheels constitute an endless track support assembly for supporting an endless track in drivable engagement thereabout. A flexible connection of the drive sprocket support arm and the support wheels absorbs shocks and vibrations transmitted to the vehicle drive axle by the displacement of the endless track over a rough ground surface.

In a snowmobile track suspension the slide frame that contacts the ground-engaging run of the track belt is carried on front and rear suspension arm assemblies. The front suspension arm assembly is pivoted to the vehicle on the axis of the sprocket drive shaft. The rear suspension arm assembly is articulated, having upper and lower sections that are rearwardly angled and pivotally interconnected and support in the region of the pivotal interconnection the idler wheel that maintains the track under tension. The arrangement eliminates stretching of the track and lengthens the track life. Furthermore the rearwardly angled arrangement of the rear suspension arm assembly allows easier backward motion of the snowmobile because the lower arm section provides an angle of attack to help the track rise above an obstacle.

A track vehicle that uses a sliding rail type suspension, which is mounted on the outside of the vehicle frame. A supporting frame is used to support the outer edge of the track. The use of this type of suspension allows the vehicle to operate at speeds in excess of 50 miles per hour. A support shaft attaches to the track suspension arm. The support shaft is secured to the vehicle using a pair of spaced apart bearings. These bearings restrain the shaft, and thus the track from a deflectional force that causes the track to splay outwards. The shaft and bearings prevent this splaying action, thus permitting the vehicle to operate at high speeds.

A track assembly includes an elongated main frame supported for pivotal movement on a transverse axis and having opposite end portions supporting a set of end wheels. An endless flexible belt extends around the end wheels and has an upper run and a lower run for engaging the ground. A plurality of longitudinally spaced bogie wheels are positioned below the main frame and engage the lower run of the belt. The bogie wheels are carried by bogie frames supported for vertical movement and also for tilting movement relative to a plane defined by the axes of the end wheels. The bogie frames are urged or biased downwardly against the lower run of the belt by compression members extending from the main frame and preferably in the form of annular rubber spring members.

The suspension system can be a fully coupled suspension, a partially coupled suspension or a non-coupled suspension. The suspension system includes at least one elongated suspension rail having a front portion, a rear portion and a bottom track-engaging portion. At least one suspension arm has an upper end adapted for pivotal connection to the vehicle chassis and a lower end pivotally connected to the suspension rail. The lower end of the suspension arm can optionally have a displacement with a non-linear component. A biasing mechanism provides a biasing force to bias the suspension rail away from the vehicle chassis. The track tensioning system coupled to the suspension arm applies a tensioning force to the endless track in response to displacement of the suspension arm. The tensioning force generates a supplemental force transmitted by the endless track that augments the biasing force of the biasing mechanism. In a suspension system with front and rear suspension arms, the track tensioning system can be coupled to the front or rear suspension arms.

A suspension assembly for mounting an endless track to a chassis of a snowmobile, the suspension assembly having a pair of pivoting arms centrally mounted to the slide members, or rails, and a weight transfer dynamic compensator capable of compensating for the weight transfer of the snowmobile when the track is pulling on the chassis. The weight transfer dynamic compensator prevents the chassis from rotating excessively with respect to the slide rails during rapid acceleration. Such a rotation of the chassis is detrimental to rider comfort and stability. The suspension assembly is coupled such the rails remain somewhat parallel to the chassis when encountering a bump at either the front of the rails or at the rear of the rails, also enhancing rider comfort and stability. The suspension assembly is coupled by virtue of a limited-translation slide bar at the rear of the suspension assembly and a tension-only member, or pulling belt, located at the front of the suspension assembly. The suspersion assembly having the weight transfer dynamic compensator improves the cornering of the snowmobile by ensuring that there is ample weight on the front skis, especially when accelerating out of a turn.

The Weight Transfer Dynamic Compensator is beneficial during acceleration and cornering of the vehicle by allowing the front end of the vehicle to remain close to the ground, thereby providing improved traction and control of the vehicle.

Each track consists of an inner track shaped to match the contour of the driving wheels, carrying spaced apart narrow rubber bands, across which are mounted metal bars. The rear wheels of the vehicle are drive wheels, the central wheels are the main load bearing wheels, the front wheel being tensioning and return wheels, inside the tracks. The trunnion assembly includes a housing and a one-piece tubular shaft journaled within bushings secured in the housing. Thrust forces acting on the shaft in one direction are counteracted by a spacer disposed between one bushing and a hub rigidly secured to the shaft. Thrust forces acting in the opposite direction are counteracted by a multi-segmented thrust ring fitted in a groove in the shaft in position to bear against another bushing in the housing. The thrust ring is held within the groove by a retainer ring disposed between the thrust ring and an annular lip of the housing. The retaining ring, the annular lip, and a seal retainer connected to the one piece shaft by a snap ring defines a seal ring cavity having a lubricant seal ring therein that is unaffected by axial thrust acting on the shaft and prevents leakage of lubricant between the shaft and the housing at the adjacent end of the shaft. The other end portion of the shaft is sealed to the hub and housing by a conventional seal ring. One end of a torsion bar is preferably received within and splined to the one-piece tubular shaft.
