Both the first code and the second code are reproduced on the article. The reproduced first code is overt code while the reproduced second code is covert and concealed from normal viewing by a concealment means such as a scratch-off material. An authorized person (e.g., a consumer) is allowed to conditionally remove the concealment to reveal the covert code. The first code and the revealed second code are used to verify the authenticity of the product with a verification center. During the verification, the first code identifies the article, while the second code verifies the first code to test the authenticity of the associated article.

A tamper proof layer is applied over the barcode such that if removed, the variable indicia would no longer be readable. Alternatively, unique human readable indicia is imaged on the substrate and then encapsulated by the tamper proof layer. The sheet is then imaged with a barcode or encoded with a magnetic stripe, simultaneously linking unique human readable indicia to the card. An alphanumeric code matching the unique indicia is displayed at the time of activation to authenticate the card. In either embodiment, the sheet is imaged in large or full format without the need for reducing the size of the sheet.

A security element including: a first layer having a first surface; an array of image regions across the first surface arranged along at least a second direction, each region including at least a first image sub-region having an average inclination defining an angle, relative to a plane of the security element, about an image region axis extending along a first direction; a diffractive optically variable effect generating structure provided in or on the first surface across the first image sub-regions, the structure including diffractive elements that extend along a direction within 45° of the first direction, wherein the structure is provided across the first image sub-regions and spatially arranged and/or modulated across the first image sub-regions in accordance with a first image so the first image is displayed by the first image sub-regions in combination at least at a first viewing angle. A transaction card, and processes for the manufacture thereof, having a core layer, optionally, one or more layers or coatings over the core layer, and at least one of a magnetic stripe, a machine readable code, and a payment module chip disposed in or on the card and suitable for rendering the card operable for conducting a transaction. The core layer comprises a metal-doped cured epoxy comprised of metal particles distributed in a binder consisting essentially of a cured, polymerized epoxy resin, the core comprising greater than 50%, preferably greater than 75%, and more preferably greater than 90%, of the weight and/or volume of the card. In some embodiments, the core includes a metal insert enveloped with the metal-doped curable epoxy, wherein the periphery of the epoxy extends beyond the periphery of the metal insert and has material properties more conducive to cutting or punching than the metal insert.
