Noise is reduced in a video system by applying motion compensated temporal filtering using previously generated motion vectors and adaptive spatial filtering at scene change frames. Various types of noise can be introduced into video prior to compression and transmission. Artifacts arise from recording and signal manipulation, terrestrial or orbital communications, or during decoding. Noise introduced prior to image compression interferes with performance and subsequently impairs system performance. While filtering generally reduces noise in a video image, it can also reduce edge definition leading to loss of focus. Filtering can also tax system throughput, since increased computational complexity often results from filtering schemes. Furthermore, the movement of objects within frames, as defined by groups of pixels, complicates the noise reduction process by adding additional complexity. In addition to improvements made to FIR spatial filtering, the present invention improves on previous filtering techniques by using Infinite Impulse Response (IR) temporal filtering to reduce noise while maintaining edge definition. It also uses motion vectors previously calculated as part of the first-pass image encoding or alternatively by transcoding to reduce computational complexity for P-frame and B-frame image preprocessing. Single stage P-frame temporal noise filtering and double stage B-frame temporal noise filtering are presented.

An ESD (electrostatic discharge) protection circuit is electrically connected to an I/O buffering pad, an internal circuit (IC), a V SS power terminal and a V DD power terminal. The ESD protection circuit comprises a first ESD-detection circuit electrically connected between the I/O pad and the V SS power terminal, a second ESD-detection circuit electrically connected between the I/O pad and the V DD power terminal, a P-STSCR comprising a first lateral SCR and a P trigger node, and an N-STSCR comprising a second lateral SCR and an N trigger node. When a positive-to-V SS ESD event occurs on the I/O buffering pad, the first ESD-detection circuit generates a first trigger current to the P-trigger node of the P-STSCR to trigger the first lateral SCR. The P-STSCR is thus quickly turned on, and current incurred from the positive voltage pulse is discharged to the V SS power terminal. When a negative-to-V DD ESD event occurs on the I/O buffering pad, the second ESD-detection circuit generates a second trigger current to the N-trigger node of the N-STSCR to trigger the second lateral SCR. The N-STSCR is quickly turned on, and current incurred from the negative voltage pulse is discharged to the V DD power terminal. In contrast to the prior method of making an on-chip ESD protection circuit, the present invention uses a substrate-triggered SCR device with a much lower switching voltage in the protection circuit, and applies the protection circuit to input ESD protection circuits, output ESD protection circuits, and power-rail ESD clamp circuits. ESD robustness of the IC product in the deep submicron CMOS processes is improved, and the total layout area of the on-chip ESD protection circuit is reduced.

Noise is reduced in a video system by applying motion compensated temporal filtering using previously generated motion vectors and adaptive spatial filtering at scene change frames. In addition to improvements made to FIR spatial filtering, the present invention improves on previous filtering techniques by using Infinite Impulse Response (IIR) temporal filtering to reduce noise while maintaining edge definition. It also uses motion vectors previously calculated as part of the first-pass image encoding or alternatively by trans coding to reduce computational complexity for P-frame and B-frame image preprocessing. Single stage P-frame temporal noise filteri ng and double stage B-frame temporal noise filtering are presented.

A double-bit non-volatile memory cell structure and a method of programming the memory cell. The memory cell includes a pair of stacked gates above a substrate, a doped region in the substrate between the stacked gate pair and a source/drain region in the substrate on each side of the stacked gate pair. The source/drain regions and the doped region are doped identically. To write data into the memory cell, the channel underneath both stacked gates is opened simultaneously. Data is written into the desired floating gate by controlling current flow direction. To read data from a first floating gate of the memory cell, a read bias voltage is applied to the first control gate above the first floating gate. In the meantime, a transfer voltage is applied to the second control gate. The presence or the absence of a conductive channel between the source/drain regions indicates whether data has been written into the first floating gate or not. The read bias voltage is greater than the threshold voltage of the first/the second floating gate in the erased state but smaller than the threshold voltage in the written state. The transfer voltage is greater than the threshold voltage in the written state.
