The last solution preferably contains 30-130 grams of sodium chloride also. Filaments, yarns, threads, cords, ribbons, tubes, or similar articles made of synthetic linear polyamides with oriented micelles are subjected while under tension to treatment with a solution of a phenol in a non-solvent for the polyamide, the solution being of insufficient concentration to dissolve the filaments. The phenol is then removed by means of a solvent for the phenol, e.g. by means of water, preferably heated, and the materials are dried while still under tension. The treatment is carried out in order to reduce the thermo-extensibility factor, and to improve the stiffness and impact-resistance. Treated filaments may be used in making strings for tennis rackets, cords for tyres, parachute shroud lines, and parachute cloth. The orifice is made of a material so that it is capable of being cut at any point along its longitudinal axis to yield an exit opening or hole with a desired size. Regardless of the point of cut, i.e., regardless of the size of the hole or opening, the inwardly extending serrations or ridges that remain after the cut insure that the material is “treated” as it is expelled from the bag through the orifice. While the orifice is capable of “treating” the material as it is discharged from the bag, the orifice is also either: (a) elastic or flexible enough in order to allow the hole or opening in the orifice to expand to pass “clogs” or “lumps” and then return to its original shape; or (b) supple or deformable enough in order to allow the orifice to be compressed or collapsed “upstream” of the hole or opening so that the “clogs” or “lumps” can be broken up and then passed through the hole or opening when the orifice returns to its original shape.

A one-piece mandrel for making elastomeric articles by a dipping process has a one-piece body which includes at least one opening extending therethrough. A split extends from the opening through a cross-section of the one-piece body. At least a portion of the body adjacent the split is formed of an elastically resilient material to allow the split to open for removal of the elastomeric article after formation, and to cause the split to self-close after removal of the article from the mandrel. Closure of the split forms a substantially continuous molding surface in the immediately vicinity of the split. Proper alignment of the mating surfaces of the split is assured by irregular (non-planar) design of the split surfaces, or by use of an alignment element embedded in the mandrel. In embodiments where a ferro-magnetic alignment element is used, a separate magnetized element may also be embedded in the mandrel to assist in holding the split closed during the dipping process. If necessary or desired, both elements may be magnetized.

A method for extruding a wide variety of plural-component fiber configurations in a spin pack utilizes one or more disposable distributor plates in which distributor flow paths are etched on one or both sides to distribute the polymer components to appropriate spinneret inlet hole locations. The etching process permits the distribution paths to be sufficiently small to facilitate issuing multiple discrete polymer component streams axially into each spinneret orifice inlet hole, whereby the resulting extruded fiber can be made up of at least one hundred side-by-side sub-fibers. If the adjacent sub-fibers are weakly bonded, they can be readily separated by agitation to significantly increase the effective yield from the spin pack and provide very fine and uniform fibers.

The etching process also permits the etched distribution paths to be small and densely packed, whereby the spinneret orifices can be more densely packed in the spinneret and staggered as between rows and columns so as to increase the fiber yield per given spinneret surface area. The etching process also permits the distribution paths to be sufficiently small to facilitate issuing multiple discrete polymer component streams axially into each spinneret orifice inlet hole, whereby the resulting extruded fiber can be made up of at least one hundred side-by-side sub-fibers. If the adjacent sub-fibers are weakly bonded, they can be readily separated by agitation or dissolution to significantly increase the effective yield from the spin pack and provide very fine and uniform fibers. Importantly, these product advantages are achieved because of the etched disposable distribution plate which reduces initial and maintenance costs and is selectively replaceable to permit differently configured fibers to be fabricated from the same spin pack assembly.

Molding apparatus for molding hollow articles without a seam or parting line even though the articles may have backdraft or undercut portions on both the inside and outside surfaces. The apparatus includes a generally one-piece flexible mold having a generally thick self-supporting wall construction which is deformable by the application of a fluid pressure differential. The mold includes a generally hollow outer portion and a generally hollow inner portion integrally formed with and extending upwardly from the bottom wall of the outer portion, said mold portions defining an upwardly opening generally annular cavity into which hardenable material is placed. The apparatus also includes a vacuum pot being of such size so as to receive said mold therein and forming a sealed generally annular chamber between the pot and the outer mold portion and means for drawing a vacuum in said chamber whereby the outer mold portion distends and expands into the vacuum chamber and the inner mold portion collapses to permit its withdrawal from the molded article. The apparatus further includes an upwardly extending mandrel fixed to the bottom wall of the pot for causing axial stretching of the inner mold portion when the vacuum is applied to cause it to contract in a uniform radial manner around the mandrel.

The silicon and the metal die are cut according to given designs to form complementary male and female die surfaces. Continuous flat belt zones of a predetermined width are separately provided on the silicon and the metal die corresponding to perimeters of the given designs. When an area of a garment is clamped and heat-pressed between the silicon and metal dies, the given designs are embossed on the garment and surrounded by heat-pressed belts, which visually highlight the embossed designs while protect non-embossed areas on the garment against undesired pull and stretch to therefore upgrade the quality of the embossed designs.

Methods for making, methods for using and articles comprising cermets, preferably cemented carbides and more preferably tungsten carbide, having at least two regions exhibiting at least one property that differs are discussed. Preferably, the cermets further exhibit a portion that is binder rich and which gradually or smoothly transitions to at least a second region. The multiple-region cermets are particularly useful in compressively loaded application wherein a tensile stress or fatigue limit might otherwise be excessive for monolithic articles. The cermets are manufactured by juxtaposing and densifying at least two powder blends having different properties (e.g., differential carbide grain size, differential carbide chemistry, differential binder content, differential binder chemistry, or any combination of the preceding). Preferably, a first region of the cermet comprises a first ceramic component and a prescribed binder content and a second region, juxtaposing or adjoining the first region, of the cermet comprises a second ceramic component and a second binder content less than the prescribed binder content. The multiple region cermets of the present invention may be used in materials processing technology including, for example, compression technology, extrusion, supercritical processing, chemical processing, materials processing, and ultrahigh pressure.

Excellent cohesiveness is achieved, preliminary processing of the wood to introduce chemical functional groups therein is not required, and the composites can be readily worked by various techniques such as shaping, planing, sawing, surface grinding or polishing, and nailing, to yield highly decorative end products.

GRAPHITE SPIRAL PACKING FOR STUFFING BOX AND METHOD FOR MANUFACTURING THE SAME ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A helical spacer, e.g. made of stiffly flexible nylon and having flat axially-presented surfaces, is slid onto a cylindrical mandrel, e.g. a die inside body. Flexible corrugated ribbon of expanded graphite is helically wound onto the mandrel between turns of the spacer. This assembly is placed in a tubular die outside body and tubular punches are run into the die outside body, and moved axially towards one another telescopically of the mandrel. The punches, engaging opposite turns at ends of spacer axially compress and radially expand the helix of graphite, raising its density and producing a product which, in transverse cross-section, closely resembles conventional pre-formed stuffing box packing rings made of the same ribbon starting material. The helical graphite packing stock is disassembled from the spacer and mandrel by rotation, and supplied to the trade. In use, some of the stock is telescoped onto a valve stem, or a mandrel of the same diameter as the valve stem, and cut to length, e.g. using a pen knife. In this way, one stock of packing material can serve valve stems of a range of sizes.
