Novel alternating bias schemes enhance the photovoltaic power extraction capability above the cell band-gap by enabling the extraction of hot carriers. In conventional solar cells, this alternating bias scheme has the potential of more than doubling their yielded net efficiency. In solar cells incorporating quantum wells (QWs) or quantum dots (QDs), the alternating bias scheme has the potential of extending such solar cell power extraction coverage, possibly across the entire solar spectrum, thus enabling unprecedented solar power extraction efficiency. Within such cells, a novel alternating bias scheme extends the cell energy conversion capability above the cell material band-gap while the quantum confinement structures are used to extend the cell energy conversion capability below the cell band-gap. Light confinement cavities are incorporated into the cell structure to allow the absorption of the cell internal photo emission, thus further enhancing the cell efficiency.

Electrical power is generated from solar and wind sources thus reducing the need for fuel oil at military forward operating bases and main operating bases. A wind turbine and a solar cell panel are connected to a battery bank. Both the turbine and the solar cells are stored in two standard military shipping containers. When transported to the desired location, these sub-systems are easily set up for operation. The entire apparatus may be disassembled for re-transport and use at another location. Necessary container modifications to connect the system for use are made in such a way as not to alter the container's outside envelope, thus enabling normal transport of the container without damage to the modifications. Each of the solar cells have discs attached so that the solar panel can be assembled in the field by sliding each disc into a mounting channel. This disc and channel structure also allows each cell to be stored in the shipping container by using similar channels mounted back to back in a storage frame located in one of the containers. The solar panel is pivotally mounted in proximity to an edge of the shipping container using mounting elements which interfit with the already provided lift fittings on the container. Described herein is a low-voltage unidirectional bypass element connected across a solar cell and operable to allow current to flow when the operation of the solar cell is suspended. The bypass element includes a single field effect transistor connected between first and second terminals as a switch, and a detection circuit for detecting suspension of the solar cell's operation and activating the switch to bypass the solar cell in the event of its operation suspension. Diodes are connected in parallel with the normally-open switch and receive current, when the solar cell's operation is suspended, to trigger operation of the detection circuit. The detection circuit includes a charge pump, a timer circuit, a control generation unit and a switch control circuit. The switch control circuit generates a control signal to close the switch and to allow current to bypass the solar cell.

Such techniques may advantageously help to reduce cost per watt related, in part, to the potentially reduced amount of semiconductor material to be used for such example embodiments.
