On closing an arc electrode 14 on the sleeve 18 approaches the fixed arcing contact 6 nearer than the arcing contact 7, as shown in Fig. 1, so the closing arc is struck between contact 6 and electrode 14 before the contacts 2, 3 engage.

An electric contact-breaker has sulphur hexafluoride gas for arc blow-out. Compression of the gas is obtained by the displacement of the moving contact. The contact-breaker has two moving parts (7, 32) to compress the gas. It also has a moving arc contact (12) connected to a main moving contact (14), and has a fixed arc contact (9) connected to a main fixed contact (6). It has a mechanism (35) to limit the travel of the moving arc contact (12) during arcing and to provide rapid separation after arcing. The mechanism (35) consists of a set of levers (22, 34) which controls opening of the contacts (12, 14, 9, 6) as well as pause and movement of the arc contact (12). The main fixed contact (6) is part of one (7) of the moving parts which compress the gas.

This results in an improvement in the extinguishing effect with respect to both small and large currents. By means of this type of universal gas-blast circuit breaker having identical dimensioning, the circuit breaker is simplified and made cheaper by using identical components for circuit breakers for different current intensities, only the piston having to be replaced.

The circuit breaker is sealed in an outer wall (1). A fixed contact section is made up of an inner conducting tube (4) and an outer surrounding wall (2). The outer surrounding wall is metallic with an extending isolating section (3). The moving contact section has an inner tubular section, fitting into the static section with an outer surrounding section (5). An inner chamber (V2) is formed between the isolating section and the moving section. The enclosure is filled with gas. A low discharge arc is accompanied by the moving plunger section being pushed back and sucking gas to the chamber via inlets (11), with a flow of gas from the outside of the chamber (18). A high discharge arc increases the pressure around the contact region, in which case gas is sucked into the chamber (V2), and also expelled to the outside of the chamber via the fixed section outlet. ADVANTAGE - Suction chamber allows good operation with low currents at medium and high voltages.
