Systems and methods utilizing solar-electrical generators are discussed. Solar-electrical generators are disclosed having a radiation-capture structure and one or more thermoelectric converters. Heat produced in a capture structure via impingement of solar radiation can maintain a portion of a thermoelectric converter at a high temperature, while the use of a low temperature at another portion allows electricity generation. Thus, unlike photovoltaic cells which are generally primarily concerned with optical radiation management, solar thermoelectrics converters are generally concerned with a variety of mechanisms for heat management. Generators can include any number of features including selective radiation surfaces, low emissivity surfaces, flat panel configurations, evacuated environments, and other concepts that can act to provide thermal concentration. Designs utilizing one or more optical concentrators are also disclosed.

The open ends of the passages 18 comprise recesses to provide a circumferential seat 20 for an o-ring 21 or similar sealing means to provide a fluid-tight seal when adjacent end fittings 15 are mounted together.

A solar panel module is connected to the top portion of two bases and to the bottom portion so that the solar panel module is mounted at a selected angle. Each of the bases has attachment points which hold insert nuts and allows mounting brackets to be secured along the mounting surfaces. The brackets can be industry standard or specific to the system. The bases stack and nest for easy transport. FIG. 1 shows an illustration summarizing the invention applied, in this case, to a vacuum-tube collector of the type consisting of a single glass tube ( 1 ) with heat pipe ( 2 ) centred inside the glass tube ( 1 ) and making contact with heat-absorbing fins ( 6 ). The invention is characterized in that the part of the inner wall of the glass tube ( 1 ) which is hidden from the sun incorporates a curved reflector ( 3 ) with a small thickness along the entire length of the glass tube ( 1 ), which reflector is secured by means of various rings ( 4 ) and is able to rotate while being operated by means of a nitinol or bi-metal torsion spring ( 5 ) which is screwed in and makes good thermal contact with the evaporator tube of the heat pipe ( 2 ) so that, when the temperature of the evaporator tube of the heat pipe ( 2 ) increases beyond a certain value, it causes the nitinol spring to change form, rotate and cause rotation of the reflector ( 3 ), protecting the heat-absorbing fins ( 6 ) from the solar radiation and preventing overheating of the collector and the solar installation. Rotation is reversed when the temperature of the evaporator tube ( 2 ) drops, the collector remaining in the normal heat supply condition. This invention is applicable, with certain modifications, to any type of vacuum-tube solar collector according to the accompanying description. Thus not only is overheating prevented in solar installations, but also the collectors are made more efficient due to the reflection of the radiation heat losses of the fins back towards themselves by means of the reflector.

The aim of the invention is to build central receiver solar power plants in which the heliostat fields can be used more efficiently. To achieve said aim, a heliostat field consisting of a near field having a uniform reflector surface density ρ of more than 60% is preferably combined with a far field whose reflector surface density ρ decreases as the distance from the receiver increases. The invention also comprises central receiver solar power plants which consist exclusively of a near field having a uniform reflector surface density ρ of more than 60%. The high reflector surface density ρ in the near field and in areas of the far field is achieved by the use of heliostats having rectangular reflectors and a rigid horizontal axle suspension (FHA) or, alternatively, by heliostats having rectangular reflectors and a rigid quasipolar axle suspension (FQA). The heliostat field concentrates the solar radiation on a receiver whose target surface, aperture, thermal absorber or photovoltaic absorber has a normal vector which is directed downward to the heliostat field that extends below the receiver in the directions North, East, South and West. The receiver is mounted in a suspended manner to a support structure that extends over the heliostat field.

The basis for the function of a linearly concentrating solar collector lies, in simple terms, in the fact that reflectors reflect incident sunlight onto a receiver tube through which a heat-absorbing medium flows. Owing to the rotation of the Earth, the reflectors need to be adjusted regularly, however, in order to ensure that the sunlight hits the receiver tube. Known tracking methods use calculated positions of the sun for this purpose, which, in the case of structural deviations, for example as a result of expansion and material stress, results in inaccuracies and losses in efficiency. The invention is intended to improve the tracking of the reflectors in such a linearly concentrating solar collector. This is achieved by virtue of the fact that the radiation intensity in the region on both sides next to the receiver tube is measured and, by means of regulation, in the case of uneven emission on both sides of the receiver tube, the reflectors are tracked to such an extent that the radiation intensity on both sides of the receiver is the same and thus the maximum of the radiation intensity is on the receiver tube.

The tracking band may be disposed within an annular recess of a rotating shaft of a heliostat. The tracking band may rotate with the rotating shaft. The shaft may be coupled with a minor such that the minor and rotating shaft rotate concurrently. As the tracking band rotates with the rotating shaft, the tracking band may pass by an encoder head, which may read the magnetic tape and relay information regarding the angular position of the mirror from the magnetic tape to a control system. The tracking band may thus provide altitude and azimuth position information for the mirror to a control system.
