The rock-excavating machine contains a frame, a cutting device, an arrow bearing the cutting device, and a vibration generating device. The cutting device includes a shaft and a cutting disc having a cutting edge, wherein the cutting disc is installed with the possibility of free rotation relatively to the shaft around the axis of the cutting device. The arrow contains the first end, the second end, and the axis of the arrow, wherein the arrow contains the first part and the second part. The first part is connected to the frame of rotation around the first rotary axis between the raised position and the lowered position, and the second part is connected to the cutting device. In addition, the second part is rotated around the second rotary axis between the raised position and the lowered position. The vibration generating device comprises a vibrator shaft and eccentric mass located adjacent to the end of the shaft of the cutting device with the possibility of rotation around the axis of the vibrator so that the rotation of the vibrator shaft and the eccentric mass create vibrations of the shaft and the cutting disc. An excavatory machine for use in coal and other mining, has a pair of rotary cutters for simultaneous presentation to the work. The cutters are mounted on the ends of a medially fulcrumed lever which can be swung about its fulcrum so to increase the work ambit of the combined cutters. The fulcrum has means for raising and lowering it and holding it at selected elevation so to suit the height of the seam being worked. The cutter assembly is mounted on a saddle which is laterally slidable and drivable from side-to-side of a base slidable along the excavation floor in the direction the work is required to follow. This base is furnished with means enabling it to be nudged along in the said direction so to force the cutters into the work. The base is provided with conveyor means to take away excavated matter and also with mechanism by which the path followed by the base may be up-or down-trended.

As shown, a main motor 4 drives a pump 6 through gearing 5 and the fluid output of the pump is fed to the control device 11. This control can be operated so as either to feed the capstan motor 9 through pipes 47 and 49, or to feed the motor 19 through pipes 48 and 50 and hence to alter the setting of the cutter support through gears 13, 18. The feed through the pipes may be arranged in either direction so as to advance or withdraw the cutter, or to rotate the cutter support in either direction, and hydraulically operated spring locking devices 12 and 72 come into action on the capstan and cutter support when their respective power units are not in action, and also in the case of failure of the system.

Coal-cutting machines. - A coal-cutting machine has a gear head carrying the turntable, a driven gear and gear-head shaft within and carried entirely by the gear head, a motor-driven shaft carrying a pinion in mesh with the driving gear, a cutter actuating member with bearings therefor carried entirely by the turntable and a flexible driving connection between the driven gear and the cutter actuating member. In a chain machine the motor shaft 1, 2 is divided at the gear head, the parts being automatically connected by a centrifugal clutch 3, 4, on starting of the motor, while a member 5 may be moved by a lever 6 to disengage the clutch. The shaft section 2 is supported in bearings 2<a> 2<b>, and carries a bevel gear 8 meshing with a crown wheel 9 fixed to a hollow shaft 10 entirely supported in the gear head 11, which may be split vertically. A turntable 14 carries the jib and entirely supports the chain driving sprocket 12 which is connected to the shaft 10 by a hexagonal, square, splined or castellated shaft 13 engaging corresponding bores in the parts 10, 12 and having sufficient freedom to avoid non-torsional stresses. The shaft 13 may be lifted by hand or screw means to interrupt the drive of the sprocket 12 &c. The turntable 14 has a bevel rack 15 engaged by bevel pinions 16, driven manually or from the haulage gear to slue the jib; a toothed segment 17 connected to a screw 18 may be moved by means of a rotatable nut 19 to engage the rack 15 to lock the jib.
