Homo- and co-polymers which are self-stabilized to ultra-violet light are derived from monomers of formula wherein one of R and R1 is H, the other is H or Me and R2 is H or Me. The polymers may be produced by polymerizing the monomers (i) in benzene or dimethylacetamide using azobisisobutyronitrile as catalyst or (ii) in an aq. mixture of sodium lauryl sulphate, dodecyl mercaptan and potassium persulphate. The above monomers and polymers may be used to stabilize substrates such as polyvinyl chloride, polyvinyl fluoride, poly(methylmethacrylate) or polystyrene.ALSO:The invention comprises compounds of formula wherein one of R and R1 is H, the other is H or Me and R2 is H or Me. These compounds are made by reacting the appropriate 4-hydroxy-alkoxy-2-hydroxybenzophenone with acrylic or methacrylic acid.

Polymers of an alpha, beta-unsaturated aldehyde are produced by reacting the aldehyde with a carboxylic acid anhydride or halide to form the corresponding diester, polymerizing the diester and then hydrolysing the polymer. This invention relates to aqueous dispersions of synthetic polymer particles, particularly those used as film-forming media in surface coating compositions. The problem of maintaining under moist conditions the adhesion to a substrate of a film formed from a surface coating composition having such an aqueous dispersion as a film former can be substantially overcome by using a dispersion wherein the film-forming polymer comprises (a) polar groups selected from amine, ureido and thioureido groups (b) a proportion of monomer units derived from acrylamide and methacrylamide, and (c) a proportion of poly(alkylene oxide). The proportions of these components present by weight of the film-forming polymer are at least 0.3% of (a), at least 0.3% of (b), at least 0.5% of (c) and from 1.4-9.0% of (a)+(b)+(c). These aqueous polymer dispersions may be used in interior or exterior surface coatings.

It can be easily and simply discharged and is advantageous in terms of separation and regeneration compared to conventional surfactants.

This invention provides both a pigment dispersing resin which is a copolymer of: (A) polymerizable unsaturated monomer containing at least one kind of ionic functional group selected from the group consisting of tertiary amino group, quaternary ammonium salt and sulfonic acid group; (B) nonionic polymerizable unsaturated monomer having polyoxyalkylene chain; (C) ultraviolet-absorbing polymerizable unsaturated monomer and/or an ultraviolet-stabilizing polymerizable unsaturated monomer; and (D) other ethylenically unsaturated monomer, and water-based pigment dispersion which comprises said pigment dispersing resin, pigment, aqueous medium and, as circumstances may demand, dispersing agent as well.

The molecular weight (weight average) of the polymer is between about 1,000 and 2,000,000. The polymers useful in the practice of the invention are prepared by emulsifying the monomers and then conducting a free-radical polymerization in water. The foregoing binder polymer is used in conjunction with additives comprising either (a) amine alcohols having the general formula where R 1 and R 2 are independently selected from the group consisting of hydrogen, alkyl, alkoxy, aryl, and phenoxy, R is alkyl, X is selected from the group consisting of hydrogen, alkyl, aryl, —OH, —COOH, —CHO, and substituted groups or (b) organic acids (water-soluble or water-dispersive), including polymeric acids. Other additives include amines, polyalcohols, polyamines, and polyesters. In the ink compositions of the present invention, the ratio of binder (1) to colorant (pigment) is greater than 1 to 10. The concentration of the additive is within the range of 0.005 to 50 wt %. The general ink formulation comprises: 5 to 50 wt % water-miscible solvent; 0.5 to 10 wt % colorant; 0.005 to 50 wt % additive; and water.

Pharmaceutical and diagnostic compositions are disclosed comprising a therapeutic or diagnostic agent and microgels comprising a copolymer derived from at least about 5 weight percent of non-esterified carboxylic acid group-containing vinyl monomers, oleophilic monomers and other nonionic hydrophilic monomers, with the proviso that when the median water swollen diameter of the microgels is 0.1 micrometer or greater, at least 5 weight percent of the monomers have a poly(alkylene oxide) appended thereto. Diagnostic and therapeutic methods are also disclosed wherein the microgels are substantially protein non-adsorbent and substantially refractory to phagocytosis.
