New pyridylamide transition metal complex compositions for olefin polymerizations are described herein featuring a 7-membered chelate ring and a cyclometalated hydrocarbyl group. When activated using typical activators these compositions form active alkene polymerization catalysts. Theses novel catalyst compositions are shown herein to be active for olefin polymerization, especially for preparation of polymers containing ethylene. 4. The complex of claim 1 , wherein M is Ti claim 1 , Zr claim 1 , or Hf.5. The complex of claim 1 , wherein Ris hydrogen claim 1 , alkyl claim 1 , aryl claim 1 , or halogen; and Ris hydrogen claim 1 , alkyl claim 1 , aryl claim 1 , or halogen.6. The complex of claim 3 , wherein Rcontains from 1 to 30 carbon atoms.7. The complex of claim 1 , wherein Ris selected from phenyl groups that are substituted with 0 claim 1 , 1 claim 1 , 2 claim 1 , 3 claim 1 , 4 claim 1 , or 5 substituents selected from the group consisting of F claim 1 , Cl claim 1 , Br claim 1 , I claim 1 , CF claim 1 , NO claim 1 , alkoxy claim 1 , dialkylamino claim 1 , hydrocarbyl claim 1 , and substituted hydrocarbyls groups with from one to ten carbons.8. The complex of claim 1 , wherein each L is independently selected from the group consisting of ethers claim 1 , thio-ethers claim 1 , amines claim 1 , nitriles claim 1 , imines claim 1 , pyridines claim 1 , and phosphines.9. The complex of claim 1 , wherein each X is independently selected from the group consisting of halide claim 1 , alkyl claim 1 , aryl claim 1 , alkoxy claim 1 , amido claim 1 , hydrido claim 1 , phenoxy claim 1 , hydroxy claim 1 , alkylsulfonate claim 1 , carboxylate claim 1 , silyl claim 1 , allyl claim 1 , alkenyl claim 1 , and alkynyl.10.
