The lower race is seatable on a hearing seat of the cylindrical reservoir of the damper while the upper race is engaged with the lower surface of a lower spring seat. A combined shielding the retaining wall has an upper wall engageable with the upper surface of the lower spring seat and a cylindrical inner wall engageable with the lower race to retain the bearing and lower spring seat together as a subassembly separable from the suspension. When assembled in the suspension, the upper wall of the shielding is maintained spaced from the upper surface of lower spring seat by the force of the suspension coil spring to allow free turning of the bearing.

When manufacturing an upper support which includes a cup piece as an inner piece, an outer piece, and a rubber elastic body integrally vulcanize adhered thereto, the shape of a tubular portion of a cup piece before integral vulcanized adhesion with the rubber elastic body is a shape having a large diameter portion at a top portion continuous with a flanged portion, a small diameter portion at a bottom portion, and a stepped portion therebetween. Following integral vulcanized adhesion with the rubber elastic body, only the small diameter portion is diameter widened by press-fitting a diameter widening jig to impart pre-compression to the rubber elastic body. No roll-back deformation of a flanged portion occurs when integrally vulcanize adhering the cup piece to the rubber elastic body, and also when imparting pre-compression to the rubber elastic body by diameter widening a tubular portion of the cup piece.

A method for reshaping an electric drive signal of a real-time damper in a sprung mass system includes detecting a periodic frequency and magnitude of a target periodic vibration of a sprung mass. The periodic vibration has velocity and elasticity components that are 90 degrees out-of-phase. An electric drive signal to the real-time damper is reshaped by a controller depending on polarity of the velocity component to thereby generate a composite drive signal. The damper is energized using the composite drive signal to modify a damper force. Reshaping the electric drive signal includes injecting a force and/or an intermittent drive suppression component onto the electric drive signal based on the frequency and magnitude. The sprung mass system may have a frame and body, motion and wheel speed sensors, the real-time dampers, road wheels, and a controller programmed to perform the method.
