Techniques are disclosed for connecting a printing plate to a print cylinder or surface. The techniques may be implemented, for instance, with respect to a printing plate, a print cylinder, a print sleeve, or some combination thereof. In an embodiment, a field of mechanical fasteners is provisioned on a printing plate, and a complementary field of mechanical fasteners is provisioned on a print sleeve or cylinder. The mechanical fasteners collectively operate to provide a mechanical bond or interface that inhibits lateral and rotational movement of the plate during printing operations, and can also be configured to manage backlash between engaging surfaces of the interface. In some cases, backlash management includes use of cushion effect integral with the mechanical bond itself and/or unidirectional and possibly angled fastener elements to provide a snugging effect. The mechanical bond may be implemented with hook-and-loop, hook-and-hook, hook-to-channel, male/female-type fittings, vacuum, suction, and/or magnetics. 1. A system and method for aligning a generally flat, planar object and for facilitating the mounting of the generally flat planar object, such as a printing plate, in near perfect alignment in a cylindrical manner. A printing plate cylinder is covered with stickyback having a release liner. A narrow axial strip of release liner is removed and replaced with a piece of release liner that may be pulled or tugged from beyond the end of the printing cylinder. The printing plate is next rolled into a cylindrical form and held in place on a device which allows registration marks on the printing plate to align the two ends of the printing plate prior to the printing plate ends being temporarily adhered to one another using a piece of tape or similar product. The aligned printing plate is next slid over the printing cylinder which is covered with sticky back. The piece of release liner covering the section of previously removed stickyback is removed and a portion of the aligned printing plate is adhered to the stickyback at that point. The piece of tape holding the two ends of the printing plate in alignment is now removed along with the remainder of the release liner on the stickyback of the printing cylinder and the remainder of the printing plate is attached to the printing cylinder, providing an aligned printing plate on a printing plate cylinder. A machine vision system is used to record and certify the alignment and can also be used to aid in the alignment process based on prior aligned plates or a reference target alignment position.

One of the walls of the slot is provided with a receiving groove of which the median plane forms with the wall of the slot an acute angle of the order of 30°. The folded end reinfor-ced by a spring-steel blade of the blanket is inserted into the slot and thrusted by using a thin piece of sheet-metal or a spatula until, due to the return force of the blanket, it engages the opening of the groove. Then, the blanket is pulled outwards so that the reinforced end penetrates into the groove. Subsequently, the second end of the blanket is attached in the known fashion to a stretching pivot. The length, in the peripheral direction, of the bottom of the widened cavity is greater than the width of the folded end of the blanket, and the width of the outer portion of the radial slot is smaller than the width of the folded end.

For use in a printing press cylinder (1) of the type having in its surface an axial cavity (2) produced for location of a lock-up device for a printing blanket on the cylinder, there is provided means to adapt the cylinder for accommodation of a printing blanket without a lock-up device, said means comprising a fillet (3) of shape for insertion into the cavity so as to bridge the cavity flushly with the cylinder surface periphery, said fillet having an arcuately curved bridge surface (10) of the same radius of curvature as that of the cylinder and having in its bridge surface a longitudinal slit (11) for guidance of a knife edge. In a preferred embodiment of the invention, the fillet is in two-part form, consisting of a lower part (4) securable in the cavity by screw-threaded means entering the cavity base, and an upper part (5) securable to the lower part and providing the arcuately curved bridge surface. The adaptation enables an existing lock-up type printing cylinder to be adapted for non-lock-up securement of a printing blanket without removal of the cylinder from the press, and provides a cylinder surface suitable for application of an adhesive-backed blanket.

A device for removing sleeves from print rollers with a minimum risk of damage has radially acting grips (22, 24) to secure onto the sleeve and with grip handles to enable the operator to pull the sleeve axially off the roller. One version has sprung bands (22, 24) linked by simple twist action tensioners (26, 28) operated by grip handles (37, 39, 47, 49). The operator opens access flaps on one side of the printing press, to expose the ends of the rollers and inserts the device to clamp onto a sleeve and drag it off the roller, while compressed air is applied into the roller. The sprung bands have grip pads on the inside faces to enhance the grip onto the sleeve.
