The invention provides an improved method of vibration welding of thermoplastic joints. Such welding is conducted by vibrating two fiber reinforced thermoplastic parts under pressure along their common interface to generate frictional heat to melt and fuse their surfaces together. Fibers from at least one surface penetrate both into the weld and into the other surface. As a result, the welded, fibre reinforced thermoplastic surfaces have increased tensile strength than heretofore achievable. Vibration welds of reinforced thermoplastic surfaces according to this invention achieve a maximum tensile strength as high as about 120 % of a weld formed by the unreinforced surfaces of corresponding thermoplastic materials.

Universally, laser welding is done by Quasi simultaneous techniques and rarely by Contour techniques. Regular or symmetrical parts, under 5 inches are welded by Quasi simultaneous. Asymmetric and large parts are best welded by Contour Welding. Kinematics of robots permits a complex contour. Automotive plastic manifolds exceed 5 inches with asymmetry. The pairing of robot contour and laser welding facilitates a new Automotive manifold. It requires a new split line for laser access and manufacturing as described. Encompassing the above requirements and solutions can reduce the moldings for a V8 to 2 major operations.

The invention relates to a suction pipe (10) which has shells (11a, b). The invention provides that the geometry of the joining surfaces (19) adopts an approximately stepped course in areas with a slight incline, in relation to the joining force (F). This produces areas with a greater or lesser incline in relation to a joining line (16) indicating the average gradient of the joining surfaces. This results in areas which can be welded with a high degree of stability because of their considerable incline towards the joining force. These areas can then support those areas which are less inclined towards the joining force. This allows the shells (11a, b) to have strongly curved joining surfaces, which increases the geometrical structural freedom for the suction pipe. In particular, it is possible to produce suction pipes with strongly curved suction channels, constructed from just two shells.

An intake pipe ( 10 ) for an internal combustion engine composed of shells ( 11 a, 11 b ) in which the geometry of the joining surfaces ( 19 ) adopts an approximately stepped course in areas with a slight incline relative to to joining force (F). This produces areas with a greater or lesser inclination relative to a joint line ( 16 ) indicating the average inclination of the joining surfaces. This results in areas which can be welded with a high degree of stability because of their considerable incline towards the joining force. These areas can then support areas which are less inclined towards the joining force. This allows the shells ( 11 a, 11 b ) to have strongly curved joining surfaces, which increases the geometric design freedom of the intake pipe and, in particular, makes it possible to manufacture intake pipes with strongly curved intake channels constructed from just two shells.

Laser welding is used to attach a laser-transparent component portion to an absorbing component portion at a laser weld joint area. The transparent component portion includes a first weld surface and a first taper locking surface formed opposite from the first weld surface. The absorbing component portion includes a second weld surface and a second taper locking surface formed opposite from the second weld surface. Prior to laser welding, the first and second taper locking surfaces cooperate to force and lock the first and second weld surfaces into abutting engagement at a predetermined pressure. A laser beam is then directed toward the first and second weld surfaces to permanently attach the component portions together. The first and second taper locking surfaces maintain the predetermined pressure during the laser welding process.
