An elastomer-coated bias fabric having one tacky surface, for use in reinforcing power transmission belts and the like is disclosed herein. The fabric is a bias fabric having opposed surfaces, yarn or fiber bundles and interstices, and which are pre-impregnated with an elastomeric latex composition. The fabric is provided with a layer of uncured non-carboxylated and non-tackified first elastomeric composition coated on both of the surfaces of the fabric and penetrating the yarn or fiber bundles and the interstices of the fabric, the layer having opposed surfaces and being substantially dry. That layer is overcoated with a layer of uncured tacky, carboxylated second elastomeric composition on only one of the surfaces thereof. This fabric reinforcement is particularly advantageous because it provides secure positional attachment between the coated fabric and the product base in preparation for vulcanization. A method for producing the coated fabric is also disclosed.

ABSTRACT OF THE INVENTION POLYMERIC FILM COATED IN-LINE WITH POLYETHYLENEIMINE Oriented polymeric film coated with polyethyleneimine is disclosed, in which the polyethyleneimine is coated in-line, i.e., during the film manufacturing process for forming the polymeric film and before heat setting the film. In-line polyethyleneimine coated polymeric film, when used to make a laminate with other polymers such as polyethylene or ionomer type polymers, shows no signs of delamination between the polymeric film and the extrusion coated polymer after 2 hours in water at 121°C at 15 psi. In-line coating polyethyleneimine on the polymeric film can occur before any orientation of the polymeric film, during interdraw, with respect to biaxially oriented film, or after orienting the film, so long as the coating occurs before heat setting the film. The preferred polymeric film is polyethylene terephthalate.

A polyolefin film which may take the form of a coating on paper has adhered thereto a heat-sealable layer of a polyolefin with a lower melting point than that of the polyolefin film. The film is prepared by applying the layer to or forming the layer on at least one surface of the film e.g. by the application thereto of the lower melting point polyolefin as a solution in a solvent, an aqueous dispersion which is thereafter heated to provide a coating of between 0,2 and 4,0 gm. per square metre, a hot melt the temperature of which may be greater than its gelation temperature, or as a fine dry powder which is thereafter fused. The layer of lower melting point polyolefin may be applied to one surface of the film and thereafter compression rolled. The compression rolling may be sufficient to reduce the thickness of the film to between one-half and one-tenth of its original thickness. The polyolefins may be polymers or copolymers of a -olefins having between 2 and 10 carbon atoms e.g. ethylene or propylene, degraded polyethylene or oxidized degraded polyethylene, and may contain a thermosetting resin such as phenol-formaldehyde. The coatings may be applied, for example, by dipping, kiss-roll, air knife or spreader-bar. The surface of the low melting point polyolefin which remains exposed may be subjected to a corona discharge or flame treatment to improve the surface for printing, or subsequent coating with photographic gelatin emulsions or emulsions of metal oxides in the production of magnetic tapes.
