A parison is transformed into the container after thermal conditioning within a blow mould of a blow moulding machine by the action of blowing pressure. In order to adjust to a contour of the container to be produced, prior to the moulding of the container, at least a part of a first blow mould is first removed from the blow station and replaced by at least a part of a second blow mould. A wide-neck synthetic resin container has a neck, a body and a bottom. A top side of the neck is sealed by a cap. The neck includes a neck tubular section, an engagement section protruding outward therefrom and engaging the cap, and a flange protruding outward at the top side. The preform (1) has a region designated for heating and a further region which is not to be heated. The region to be heated is subjected to microwaves in a resonator. All of this region is heated simultaneously. It is alternatively heated progressively in steps or sections. The region is moved and/or heated continuously. The preform is moved longitudinally (A) or at right angles to this direction, into or through the disc- or plate-shaped resonator (11) which completely surrounds it. The path of preform movement, projected into the extended plane of the (TE wave) resonator during heating, is essentially circular. Movement through the resonator takes place repeatedly, no less than twice. This movement is superimposed on the circular movement, which is followed by the resonator. Preform temperature is measured internally and/or externally, once or more times, during the operation. The value is sent to a controller for the following heating process, or to control heating of the present preform. In an adjustment method, by measuring the temperature profile of the preform and comparison with a desired profile, the field strength distribution in the resonator is adjusted accordingly. Variants of these procedures are described, in accordance with the foregoing principles. Salient features include an optionally-moving microwave reflector, delivery to an associated polyethylene terephthalate (PET) stretch-blowing process. Heating may be intentionally non-uniform over the length, thickness and/or circumference. Microwave heating is supplemented by infra red heating. A microwave generator feeds the ring resonator. A process and apparatus for heating injected, cold preform blanks to blow molding temperature on a conveyor path wherein they are thereafter fed to a blow mold, the preform blanks being first heated to a temperature below the blow moulding temperature, then cooled and later reheated to a temperature slightly above the blow molding temperature, whereupon the preform blanks are allowed to equalize in temperature inside and out or are caused to do so by slightly cooling their outsides. The spacing on the holders on the conveyor chain, on which are mounted the preform blanks, is selectively adjustable to avoid heat radiation losses. The neck portions of the mounted preform blanks are surrounded completely by protective sheathings so that such neck portions are not heated while being conveyed to the blow mold.

In the method, the parisons are rotated about their longitudinal axes while being conveyed adjacent a thermal conditioning means, which includes vertically spaced radiant heating elements and a gaseous cooling source. The heating elements radiate infra-red rays having a wave length to penetrate and heat the full thickness of the parison wall; whereas the gaseous cooling source directs a stream of air onto the surface of the parison facing the heating elements to prevent the parison surface from being overheated. Additionally, each of the heating elements may be individually regulated so that the parisons can be differentially heated along their axes to control the wall thickness of the final blown articles.

The invention relates to a method and apparatus for forming molecularly oriented plastic containers from generally cylindrical, hollow preforms (10) with one open end (18) formed by injection molding from a partially crystalline, molecularly orientable plastic for subsequent stretch blow molding. Melted material is injected into a preform mold at a predetermined fill rate controlled to minimize molecular flow orientation and further controlled to minimize residual stress which both are otherwise developed during injection. The preform (10) is then reheated below the crystal melting point by radiant heat source to a temperature that intercrystalline structures are melted without melting the crystal nuclei. To avoid so-called edge effects resulting from the geometry of the heating zone, the preform decreases in thickness at both (18, 12) ends. The preform is then rapidly transferred to the mold in which it is stretched axially with a rod engaging its closed end and then rapidly quenched against a polished mold surface.

The process is completed by tempering and producing a protective surface on the preform blanks before they are supplied to a blow molding device. The entire process requires only several minutes of time.
