The pot unit is air-tightly connected to the connection unit, and the conjunction area of the connection unit communicates with the space in the pot unit.

An infrared welder for thermoplastic materials comprising the combination of a halogen lamp producing illumination in the infrared band located at the focal point of a first parabolic reflector. The parabolic reflector is joined in a substantially continuous fashion with a non-imaging lower reflector such as a Winston cone or a "CPC" having a lower aperture through which essentially all of the radiation from the source is directed. The aperture defines the shape and size of the weld area. The lower reflector may be brought into contact with the thermoplastic materials during the welding operation. Alternatively, a selectively operable press device may be used. Several embodiments are disclosed including embodiments which produce circular spot welds, linear welds, curved welds and corner welds.

At the inlet end an air chamber block 22 may be provided to prevent Venturi effects. Alternatively the fluid pressure may be admitted at the centre of the tube cavity and allowed to pass to the atmosphere from both ends of the die cavity. The double tip ended article is then cut in half and finished in the normal manner.

The invention concerns a plastic closure part () which can be fixed to a container or a further closure part to be fixed to the container, comprising a tubular discharge portion () whose cross-section is closed by a membrane () which has a tear line () extending peripherally over more than 180° along its outer edge and a corresponding method for the production of such a closure. Plastic structures such as injection molding housing structures and other structures may be provided with openings. An opening may have sidewall surfaces. Machining operations and other techniques may be used in forming the openings. Openings may be processed to enhance resistance to stress-induced cracking of the plastic structures along the sidewall surfaces. Cracking resistance may be obtained by activating the surface using heat or laser treatment and by electroplating the activated surface to form a metal liner structure. Surface treatments using applied liquid chemicals or heat may form a treated layer on the surface of an opening with enhanced cracking resistance. A plastic sleeve or other insert may form a liner structure in an opening that resists cracking. Liner structures may also be formed by applying heat or light to a coating in an opening.

Bung holes are generated in hollow containers by fitting a blow moulding tool with a probe having an externally threaded sleeve against which the bung thread may be formed. The probe can be rotated to disengage the thread between chilling and ejection of the moulding. The process is esp. for putting pierced or blind bung or vent holes in relatively small containers, avoiding manipulation and orientation of the moulding necessary for drilling of holes in prefabricated casks. The holes are made in zone below the upper parison pinch-off level. The probe is opt. coaxial with the gas injection needle for inflating the parison. A tank connection is installed during extrusion blow molding. The connection is a component penetrating the tank wall. Part of the connection forms a lost molding plunger. The tank is molded in stages, from two extruded-strip preforms (1) in a three-part mold.
