In exemplary embodiments of the present invention, if two different materials which do not bond together are used to make a pre-form, then such a pre-form can be made by a bi- injection process, using the same mold. In such exemplary embodiments, first the outer pre-form can be fashioned, and then the inner pre-form can be molded through a center hole provided at the bottom of the outer pre-form. The two pre-forms are then connected to each other. Formation of an optical design pattern in an article of polyethylene terephthalate by utilizing the property of polyethylene terephthalate to become crystallized and whitened upon slow cooling and the fact that cooling of a plastic article molded within a mold advances from the surface portion of the article in contact with the surface of the mold toward the wall of the article. Based on this theory, a desired portion of the wall of an article of polyethylene terephthalate is whitened by properly controlling the degree and speed of cooling of the polyethylene terephthalate article in the mold to cool it slowly. The whitened portion in the wall is developed as an optical design pattern that can be viewed from outside. The whitened optical design pattern developed by the aforesaid technique can be made more distinct by heat treatment and stretching treatment.

Based on this theory, a desired portion of the wall of an article of polyethylene terephthalate is whitened by properly controlling the degree and speed of cooling of the polyethylene terephthalate article in the mold to cool it slowly. The whitened portion in the wall is developed as an optical design pattern that can be viewed from outside. In exemplary embodiments of the present invention, if two different materials which do not bond together are used to make a pre-form, then such a pre form can be made by a bi- injection process, using the same mold. A blow molded synthetic resin bottle has a body and an elongated neck with the body providing a shoulder extending about the base of the neck. The neck has a first collar extending thereabout spaced adjacent the shoulder and at least one additional collar extending thereabout adjacent the upper end of the neck. The resin in the neck is substantially unoriented. To produce the bottle, a synthetic resin preform is injection molded with a generally tubular body and the elongated neck. A plural preform assembly having nested preforms with an inner preform and an outer preform. The preforms are sealably joined together, defining a volume between the preforms. Propellant is disposed in the volume between the preforms. The preforms are later blow molded to provide a bag in bottle, bottle in bottle or similar container. The propellant charge is already present when blow molded, preventing the need for a later propellant filling step.

Blow molding method and apparatus for forming squeezable plastic container

A blow-molding method for forming a squeezable or tubular plastic container is provided. The method includes molding a preform having a sidewall, an interior cavity, an open end, a closed end, and a neck adjacent the closed end of the preform. The neck of the preform has an engagement structure. The method includes providing a blow mold system including a blow mold cavity. The method includes placing at least a portion of the preform into the blow mold cavity, and blow molding a one-piece container body from the preform by inflating the preform within the blow mold cavity. The container body has an open end, a closed end and a neck adjacent to the closed end. Wherein the open end of the container body is formed from the open end of the preform, and the closed end of the container body is formed from the closed end of the preform. The method includes creating a dispensing opening through the closed end of the container body.

A method includes injection molding a preform using a two phase injection system having a first phase in which a material is injected into the preform and a second phase in which the material is injected into the preform. The preform is disposed in a mold. The preform is blow molded into an intermediate article. The intermediate article is trimmed to form a finished container. The first phase includes injecting a material into the preform to form a single layer of the preform and the second phase includes injecting the material to form inner and outer layers and an intermediate layer between the inner and outer layers. The inner and outer layers include the material and the intermediate layer includes at least one additive. Finished containers are disclosed.

A preform is disclosed for the production of plastic containers, for example plastic bottles, in a stretch-blow-molding method. The preform can include an elongated preform body having a closed longitudinal end and which connects on an opposite longitudinal end to a neck section having a pour opening, the neck section having an outside wall with a fastening means. A rotating flange at a transition from the preform body to the neck section, wherein at least a portion of the rotating flange is annular and radially extends above an outside wall of the preform body. A peripheral annular groove can extend obliquely from a base of the annular groove to the outside wall of the neck section forming a circumferential inner collar, and wherein the inner collar the direction of the preform body, extends axially above the annular groove and extends into an inside wall of the preform body.

The technical problem to be solved is to change the thickness of the colored resin layer of the preform gradually in the upward or downward direction, by utilizing a tendency of gradual decrease in the thickness of the colored resin layer caused by the flow of the main resin inside the preform mold when the main resin and the colored resin are injected into the mold. This involves adjusting the injection pattern including the time of starting and ending the supply of the main resin and the colored resin, and pressure or velocity profiles, reducing the thickness of the colored resin layer gradually upstream or downstream, injection-molding the preform in which a color-gradated portion associated with the thickness of the colored resin layer has been formed, and biaxially drawing and blow molding this preform into a bottle having a color-gradated portion.

A system and method for post-treatment of a hollow body molding produced in an injection molding mold. A receiving finger is provided with a first end and a second end. The receiving finger is designed that it can engage into the hollow body molding. The outside shape of the receiving finger substantially corresponds to inside shape of the hollow body molding so that the receiving finger ( 5 ) can hold the hollow body molding. Preferably, the outside diameter of the receiving finger is substantially equal to inside diameter of the hollow body molding in a cooled condition so that the hollow body molding can be removed from the receiving finger even after shrinkage. Desirably, the outside diameter of the receiving finger is between about 0.01 mm and about 1 mm and preferably about 0.1 to about 0.5 mm smaller than the inside diameter of the hollow body preform in the removal condition so that the hollow body molding can be removed from the receiving finger even after shrinkage. An apparatus is desirably provided for at least one of cooling and heating the hollow body molding so that the hollow body molding can be selectively cooled or heated by means of the system.

Disclosed are preforms which incorporate improvements in the region of the neck and upper segment of the body to allow the production of lightweight containers, such as bottles suitable for containing water or other beverages. In accordance with certain embodiments, the improvements include a thinner neck finish area than conventional bottles, where the thinner area is extended into the upper segment of the body portion below the support ring. Reducing the thickness in these areas of the bottle allows for less resin to be used in forming the preform and bottle.

In embodiments, the blow mold system has at least two interchangeable base portions that allow for containers with differently-sized or differently-shaped necks to be formed.

A plastic container is provided that includes a hollow body portion including a lower supporting base portion; a sidewall portion extending upwardly from the base portion; and a neck portion extending upwardly from the sidewall portion. The neck portion includes a support flange having an upper and lower surface, a tamper-evident formation, and a dispensing opening at the top of the neck portion. In an embodiment, the dispensing opening has an inner diameter that is at least 22 mm, and the vertical distance from the top of the dispensing opening to the lower surface of the support flange is 0.580 inches or less. A preform and method for making a container are also disclosed.
