We describe a thermal cycler comprising a Peltier- type thermoelectric element (36) used for cooling a sample block (34), and a non- Peltier- type heating device (38) for heating the sample block. The cycler also includes a heat sink (28) connected to the Peltier- type element by a heat pipe (40), which permits thermal energy to transfer from the Peltier- type element to the heat sink. This configuration operates more efficiently than conventional thermal cyclers which use Peltier- type elements for heating and cooling, and allows a more rapid cycling time as well as operation in a wider range of ambient temperatures. Certain embodiments utilise the Peltier- type element as a thermal gate to reduce thermal loss during heating when the Peltier- type element is switched off.

Further, the funnel includes one or more cutting ribs for cutting the pierceable barrier such that upon cutting of the pierceable barrier the substance is released from the reservoir, flows through the channel in the funnel and into the sample receptacle to be mixed with the sample. The method begins with the introduction of a sample including cells into one or more microfluidic channels. In one embodiment, the device includes at least two processing steps. For example, a mixture of cells is introduced into a microfluidic channel that selectively allows the passage of a desired type of cell, and the population of cells enriched in the desired type is then introduced into a second microfluidic channel that allows the passage of the desired cell to produce a population of cells further enriched in the desired type. The present invention generally relates to a sample receiving device for releasably storing a substance. The sample receiving device includes a lid having a reservoir for retaining the substance, and a pierceable barrier sealing the substance within the reservoir; and b) a funnel for receiving a sample and configured for closure by the lid. The funnel is configured for releasable attachment to a sample receptacle such that a sample can be provided to the funnel and travel through the channel in the funnel into the sample receptacle. Further, the funnel includes one or more cutting ribs for cutting the pierceable barrier such that upon cutting of the pierceable barrier the substance is released from the reservoir, flows through the channel in the funnel and into the sample receptacle to be mixed with the sample. The present invention also provides a kit for collecting and storing biomolecules.

During the centrifuge process the buoy separates the red blood cells from another fraction of the whole blood. After the centrifuge process is finished a plunger is used to produce at least two other fractions, including a plasma fraction and a buffy coat. Then, the buffy coat may be removed from the container without commingling the fractions of the sample.

The present invention involves collecting the sample from a flowing or quiescent pool of liquid also containing solid, semisolid or colloidal material with a swab comprised of a handle and a mass of fibrous material or foamed, open cell material which, when immersed in and thoroughly wetted by the liquid, entraps solid, semisolid and/or colloidal material and delivers only the liquid to the sample receiving zone of the test strip.
