A beat frequency is created at the location the signals intersect with each other. The beat frequency is the difference between the frequencies of the two signals and has an amplitude that is additive and greater than either signal alone. The depth of the interferential signal is increased by increasing the carrier frequency of the signals. The direction of the interferential signal shifts toward the signal having the lower amplitude. The electrical stimulation is used in combination with biologics to further increase bone growth. The target area is large enough to include multiple vertebral segments.

The circumferential electrode further includes a bulk region and a border region, the border region completely surrounding the bulk region, and the electrically conductive layer is in the bulk region but is not in the border region. Cells that are in the process division are vulnerable to damage by AC electric fields that have specific frequency and field strength characteristics. The selective destruction of rapidly dividing cells can therefore be accomplished by imposing an AC electric field in a target region for extended periods of time at particular frequencies with particular filed strengths. Some of the cells that divide while the field is applied will be damaged, but the cells that do not divide will not be harmed. This selectively damages rapidly dividing cells like bacteria, but does not harm normal cells that are not dividing. Since the vulnerability of the dividing cells is strongly related to the alignment between the long axis of the dividing cells and the lines of force of the electric field, improved results can be obtained when the field is sequentially imposed in different directions.

An electrode for measuring electrical activities of a living body and/or for outputting electrical signals into the living body, with an electrically insulated and flexible line, which is connected fixedly or releasably to a distally arranged and electrically conductive electrode tip. The electrode tip is designed for insertion into the body. A polymeric hydrogel composition is described for the delivery of a pharmaceutically active agent when an electrical stimulus is applied to the composition. The composition comprises a polymer which forms the hydrogel, such as poly vinyl alcohol (PVA) cross-linked with diethyl acetamidomalonate (DAA), an electroactive polymer such as polyaniline and a pharmaceutically active agent such as an analgesic, and in particular, indomethacin. The composition can be subcutaneously implanted at a targeted site and under normal conditions, the active agent will be entrapped in the hydrogel itself. However, upon the application of an electric current to the hydrogel, the active agent will be released. When the electric current is removed, the change is reversed and the active agent will cease to be released. In one embodiment of the invention, the hydrogel composition is for use in alleviating chronic pain. 2. The hydrogel composition according to claim 1 , wherein the polymer which forms the hydrogel is poly vinyl alcohol (PVA).3. The hydrogel composition according to claim 2 , wherein the polymer which forms the hydrogel is cross-linked with a cross-linking agent.4. An electrode comprising:an electrode body having a first and second side, wherein the first side comprises a flexible barrier layer comprising a heat-sealable material and the second side comprises a conductive layer;a lead wire that is connected to the flexible barrier layer of the electrode body on the second end and which electrically connects the electrode to a medical device via a path from the first side to the second side of the electrode bodyan electrically conductive gel layer disposed on the electrode body and which is further in electrical communication with the conductive layer;a release liner sealed to said flexible barrier layer around a periphery of said gel layer;a first peel tab disposed on the periphery of the electrode body on a first end;a second peel tab disposed on the periphery of the electrode body on a second end; anda strain relief tab which bonds the second peel tab to the lead wire in a configuration that releases strain between the lead wire and the flexible barrier layer.2. A variety of arrangements and methods relating to a defibrillator are described. In one aspect of the invention, a defibrillator includes two paddles that each include a defibrillator electrode covered in a protective housing. The two paddles are sealed together using a releasable seal to form a paddle module such that the housings of the paddles form the exterior of the paddle module. An electrical system including at least a battery and a capacitor is electrically coupled with the paddles. The battery is arranged to charge the capacitor. The capacitor is arranged to apply a voltage at the defibrillator electrodes, which generates an electrical shock for arresting a cardiac arrhythmia. 1. A portable defibrillator comprising:two pads electrically connected to each other, each pad including a defibrillator electrode, the defibrillator electrode including a plurality of electrically conductive protrusions; andan electrical system coupled with the two pads, the electrical system including at least a battery and a capacitor, the battery arranged to charge the capacitor, the capacitor arranged to apply a voltage at the defibrillator electrodes, thereby delivering an electrical shock suitable for arresting a cardiac arrhythmia.2. The portable defibrillator as recited in claim 1 , wherein:each pad is a paddle with a protective housing that covers the corresponding defibrillator electrode, the two paddles sealed together using a releasable seal to form a paddle module, the housings of the paddles cooperating to form the exterior of the paddle module; andthe pluralities of electrically conductive protrusions are unexposed and disposed within the paddle module.3.
