Fluid force may be adjusted to provide selective tissue resection such that soft tissue is removed while harder tissue is left undamaged. In order to gain a working space within the urethra, another fluid may be introduced to insufflate the urethra in the region of treatment.

A micro-sized CAP (μCAP) employed to target glioblastoma tumors in the murine brain. Various plasma diagnostic techniques were applied to evaluate the physics of helium μCAP such as electron density, discharge voltage, and optical emission spectroscopy. The direct and indirect effects of μCAP on glioblastoma (U87MG-RedFluc) cancer cells in vitro were investigated and indicate that μCAP-generated short- and long-lived species and radicals [i.e. hydroxyl radical (OH), hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), nitrite (NO2-), et al] with increasing tumor cell death in a dose-dependent fashion. Translation of these findings to an in vivo setting demonstrates that intracranial μCAP is effective at preventing glioblastoma tumor growth in the mouse brain. The μCAP device can be safely used in mice, resulting in suppression of tumor growth. These initial observations establish the μCAP device as a potentially useful ablative therapy tool in the treatment of glioblastoma.

Fluid force may be adjusted to provide selective tissue resection such that soft tissue is removed while harder tissue is left undamaged. In order to gain a working space within the urethra, another fluid may be introduced to insufflate the urethra in the region of treatment.

Systems and methods are provided for applying a high frequency voltage in the presence of an electrically conductive fluid to create a relatively low-temperature plasma for ablation of tissue adjacent to, or in contact with, the plasma. In one embodiment, an electrosurgical probe or catheter is positioned adjacent the target site so that one or more active electrode(s) are brought into contact with, or close proximity to, a target tissue in the presence of electrically conductive fluid. High frequency voltage is then applied between the electrode terminal(s) and one or more return electrode(s) to generate a plasma adjacent to the active electrode(s), and to volumetrically remove or ablate at least a portion of the target tissue. The high frequency voltage generates electric fields around the active electrode(s) with sufficient energy to ionize the conductive fluid adjacent to the active electrode(s). Within the ionized gas or plasma, free electrons are accelerated, and electron-atoms collisions liberate more electrons, and the process cascades until the plasma contains sufficient energy to break apart the tissue molecules, causing molecular dissociation and ablation of the target tissue.

The present invention includes forming a cavity or plurality of channels in the tongue. The cavity may be collapsed using a suture, fastener or bioadhesive. An emplaced suture may be provided to hold the cavity in a collapsed position thereby reducing the degree of obstruction. Additionally, thermal energy may be applied to the tissue surface immediately surrounding the channels to cause thermal damage to the tissue surface, thereby creating hemostasis and stiffening the surrounding tissue structure.

The apparatus may shift from a first mode of operation wherein the first electrode type serves as active electrode, to a second mode of operation wherein the second electrode type serves as active electrode, and back to the first mode of operation, without operator input. Such a shift may be determined by the presence or absence of tissue at the first and second electrode types, or by a change in electrical impedance in the milieu of the second electrode type, and such a shift may be dependent on a suitable surface area ratio of the first electrode type to the second electrode type. The probe may include an aspiration device which accommodates an aspiration stream emanating from the target site, and a fluid delivery device for delivering an extraneous electrically conductive fluid to the probe or to the target site.

In many embodiments, devices, systems, and methods for locating and treating a target nerve with cold therapy are provided. For example, a focused cold therapy treatment device may be provided that is adapted to couple with or be fully integrated with a nerve stimulation device such that nerve stimulation and focused cold therapy may be performed concurrently with the cryo-stimulation device. Improvements in nerve localization and targeting may increase treatment accuracy and physician confidence in needle placement during treatment. In turn, such improvements may decrease overall treatment times, the number of repeat treatments, and the re-treatment rate. Further, additional improvements in nerve localization and targeting may reduce the number of applied treatment cycles and may also reduce the number of cartridge changes (when replaceable refrigerant cartridges are used).
